Hi,

so my girlfriends laptop was getting a bunch of warning messages about spyware/malware etc. . . and it seems the culprit was a little bugger named spools.exe that had materialized in her system32/drivers folder the day before. I googled it and it seems this is a nasty little guy so I started by running spybot S&D to clean off any spyware/malware that may have made its way on and that pretty much took care of everything except spools.exe, I disabled it in the startup and then rebooted however it took the liberty of adding itself back to the start up list anyway.

So I went in and deleted the spools.exe manually, however now her PC won't run any .exe files, it always prompts me with the 'open with' menu. After doing some more reading it seems this file is definitely the virus but also digs its hooks into every .exe file you have, so I guess my question is can I DL a clean file from somewhere, or is there a way to fix this problem with the .exe files?

I saw a post down a bit from a fella that seemed to be having a similar problem but it also appeared he had a few other problems wrapped up in there as well, so I wasn't entirely sure if the problem was the same. Apologies in advance if I'm violating etiquette for this forum by creating a new thread.

DL'd HJT but can't run it, would booting up in safe mode change this?

Crunchie

thanks alot, I went to the site and ran the exexpfix. now .exe's are running as normal. I went ahead and ran HJT and here is the log

Are there some things here that I need to clean out?

On a side note, i dl'd firefox and the noscript addon to my girlfriend's PC with the hope that this will prevent further issues down the road. Are there any other plug ins I should look into? is firefox with noscript better off than IE? (Its what i run on my PC along with spybot s&d and I haven't had any issues).

thanks again

Don't know much about FF other than it's better than IE :). Opera is a much better option than either IMO.

Download
SDFix
and save it to your desktop.

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the
following :

  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the
    Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
  • In Safe Mode, right click the SDFix.zip folder and choose Extract
    All
    ,
  • Open the extracted folder and double click RunThis.bat to
    start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the script.
  • It will remove the Trojan Services then make some repairs to the
    registry and prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • Your system will take longer that normal to restart as the fixtool
    will be running and removing files.
  • When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and
    display Finished, then press any key to end the script and load
    your desktop icons.
  • Finally open the SDFix folder on your desktop and copy and paste the
    contents of the results file Report.txt back onto the forum with
    a new HijackThis log

Finished!

Right click on hijackthis.exe and change the name to analysthis before scanning with it.

===============

Scan with HijackThis and then place a check next to all the following, if present:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [144a0d18] rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\ualngbrs.dll",b

O9 - Extra button: ShopperReports - Compare product prices - {C5428486-50A0-4a02-9D20-520B59A9F9B2} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\shdocvw.dll
O9 - Extra button: ShopperReports - Compare travel rates - {C5428486-50A0-4a02-9D20-520B59A9F9B3} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\shdocvw.dll

Now, close all instances of Internet Explorer and any other windows you have open except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

===============

Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure you are able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

files...

C:\WINDOWS\system32\ualngbrs.dll

-

Note that some of these file(s)/folder(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them in Safe Mode by doing the following:

  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear.

Select the first option to run Windows in Safe Mode hit enter.

-

Reboot.

===============

After rebooting, rescan with hijackthis and post back a new log. Please let me know how your pc is now.

OK, I changed the name to analysthis and then ran the scan and fixed the ones you had listed (the first one wasn't there).
I then went into the system32 folder and found ualngbrs.dll and tried to delete it but it wouldn't let me so I went into safe mode but the file wasn't there (I had view hiddens turned on) so I rebooted in normal mode and the file isn't there now either.
Windows is still flipping out saying its found spyware and keeps running Liveantispy and then asking for 50 bucks to fix what it thinks it found. Anyway heres the HJT report.

==================

Please download ComboFix by sUBs from HERE or HERE

  • You must download it to and run it from your Desktop
  • Physically disconnect from the internet.
  • Now STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields) as they could easily interfere with ComboFix.
  • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a log. Please save that log to post in your next reply along with a fresh HJT log
  • Re-enable all the programs that were disabled during the running of ComboFix..

Note:
Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Post new Hijackthis log.

Seems to be running fine, however when I ran HJT scan AVG popped up a threat detected

Upload the file to Jotti's or virustotal first to be sure, then move it on over if it comes back bad.
I see nothing else in your log :).

Hey 2 things i wanted to ask about:

1) I saw numerous threads with instructions for removing combofix when everything was done, should I go ahead and do this?

2) winik.sys definitely seems to be a bad mo-fo of a file (and not in a good sam jackson kind of way). Several other threads on other sites have suggested using a program called Killbox to get rid of it, and a few mentioned HJT has a way of removing files on reboot that can't be deleted in other ways (apparently winik.sys can't even be deleted in safemode). Any thoughts/opinions on this killbox program?

thanks again for all of your help

Combofix will be removed once you are cleaned :). Killbox is excellent, but we will use combofix to get rid of that file.

1. Please open Notepad Click Start , then Run
Type notepad.exe in the Run Box.
2. Now copy/paste the entire content of the codebox below into the Notepad window:
KillAll::

Driver::
C:\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\WinIK.sysNote: the above code was created specifically for this user. If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

3. Save the above as CFScript.txt

4. Physically disconnect from the internet.

5. Now STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields) as they could easily interfere with ComboFix.

6. Then drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as depicted in the animation below. This will start ComboFix again.

7. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), please post the following reports/logs into your next replyafter youre-enable all the programs that were disabled during the running of ComboFix:Combofix.txt
A new HijackThis log.
Please take note:

CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

When I ran the HJT the AVG popped up agaiin with the same message about the WinIK.sys file, checked the folder and its still there.

Please download OTMoveIt from here:
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/oldtimer/OTMoveIt.exe
Save it to your desktop.
Please double-click OTMoveIt.exe to run it.
Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

C:\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\WinIK.sys

Return to OTMoveIt, right click on the "Paste List of Files/Folders to be moved" window and choose Paste.
Click the red Moveit! button.
The list will be processed and the results for each line will be displayed in the right-hand pane.
Highlight everything in the Results window, press CTRL+C or right-click, choose Copy, right-click again and Paste it in your next reply.
Close OTMoveIt

If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

If you still have the problem, find the regedit.exe in the windows folder and copy it to the desktop. Rename the desktop copy to regedit.com, then run it by double-clicking. go to the key: My Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\open\command On the right panel double-click (Default) to edit the Value Data and remove everything except "%1" %* Click OK to accept the change then close the edit session. All the normal .exe programs will now run. If the problem returns, then you have not gotten rid of the rootkit/virus that caused it. You then need to use a currently updated antivirus program.

Sorry it took me a few days to get back to this I've been out of town. That link for OTmoveIT came up 404 not found, I dug around the bleepingcomputer forums and found a new version http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/oldtimer/OTMoveIt2.exe

I downloaded that and ran it, still seems to be no dice, this is the log that came up after reboot:

File move failed. C:\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\WinIK.sys scheduled to be moved on reboot.

OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer - Version 1.0.4.2 log created on 06152008_185519

Files moved on Reboot...
File move failed. C:\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\WinIK.sys scheduled to be moved on reboot.

Can you try again in safe mode. Try the following if unsuccessful.

Pocket killbox.
Download the Pocket KillBox
Unzip the file to your desktop.
Run Pocket Killbox and paste the full file path of the below file in the box and click on Standard File Kill and End Explorer Shell While Killing File. Click on the button with the red circle and an X in the middle after you enter the file.

C:\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\WinIK.sys

Reboot afterwards if the file is successfully deleted.

If the file is not deleted, do not reboot yet. Run Pocket Killbox again and paste the full file path in the box and click on Delete on Reboot. Next click on the button with the red circle and an X in the middle. You will get a message saying "File with be deleted on next reboot, Process and Reboot now?" Click "Yes" to reboot.

Hi All,

I've been facing the same problem as mentioned above after I heroically deleted the spools.exe file from my System32\drivers folder.

I use a Windows Xp Home Edition with SP2 and do not have anti virus solutions installed.

I was searching for a key for a software yesterday when I accidentally ran the file to land in hell.

Also I am a newbie so didn't know if I have to begin a new thread or reply to one that already exists.

Apologies and Thanks in advance.
