I am still in the dark ages and using Windows 95. Just caught the HotOffers Hijacker, and need to get rid of him. Problem is my system is soooo slow. I have major problems downloading. I have not been able to download a winzip program to use the HJT program.

Any suggestions? With my using Windows 95, does it change how to deal with this nasty bug, besides all I have seen on other threads?

Thanks for the help.

I finally got the HJT log to work. Here it is. Will someone please look over and tell me where to go. Thanks in advance.

Hi Seaner.

===============

Now, let's open a command prompt and unregister the dll(s) we're going to remove, by entering the following:

regsvr32 /u POPUP_BL.DLL

It's ok, if these aren't found or 'error' out. If you want, just copy and paste the individual lines to the command prompt to save on the typing.

===============

Run HiJackThis and click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cus.../search/ie.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cus...//www.yahoo.com

O2 - BHO: BL Class - {28F65FCB-D130-11D8-BA48-8BE0C49AF370} - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\POPUP_BL.DLL

Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

===============

Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure your able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

files...

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\POPUP_BL.DLL

-

Note that some of these file(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them from "Safe Mode".

===============

Post back a new log, and let me know how everything goes.

Thanks for the help Crunchie. I tried to unregister the dll, but i got an error message. I fixed with HJT as you said. I couldn't find the POPUP_BL.DLL file, even showing hidden files and folders. Attached is my new HJT log. Still having the same problem. Thanks for your continued help...

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SS.EXE

Delete it if it comes back bad.

Reboot into safe mode following the instructions here and rescan with hijackthis. Scan with hijackthis and tick the boxes next to all the following entries, then close all browser and explorer windows, and hit the "Fix checked" button.

Reboot normally.

Go here to TrendMicro for an on-line scan & set it to autoclean for you. When it completes, post back the full filename of any files that cannot be cleaned or deleted.

Try this scan at Panda as well.

The scan here does not require an active X install, but uses java instead.

Thanks again Crunchie for your help. We're going to get this sucker, aren't we?

I scanned the SS.EXE file, and it was bad. I had to go to Safe Mode to delete it, but I did delete it.

I ran HJT and deleted what you said. After reboot, I ran TrendMicro. It said I was unable to delete ADW GLOBOSRCH.C

I also ran Panda.

My newest HJT log is attached.

One more thing Crunchie. Panda found the following...

C\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\SYSTR.DLL

AND

C\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\systr.dll

Sean

Those are the files I know exist, but could not see on your system. W98 does not have a system32 folder. AFAIK it's just C\WINDOWS\SYSTEM yes?

Double check to make sure and make the relevant editing below.

Download the Pocket KillBox
Unzip the file to your desktop.
Run Pocket Killbox and paste the full file path of each of the below files in the box and click on Standard File Kill and End Explorer Shell While Killing File. Click on the button with the red circle and an X in the middle after you enter each file (see the files below).

C\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SYSTR.DLL
C\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\systr.dll

Reboot afterwards if the files are successfully deleted.

If all files are not deleted, do not reboot yet. Run Pocket Killbox again and paste the full file path in the box and click on Delete on Reboot. Next click on the button with the red circle and an X in the middle. You will get a message saying "File with be deleted on next reboot, Process and Reboot now?" Click "Yes" to reboot only after the last file you enter.

Scan with hijackthis and tick the boxes next to all the following entries, then close all browser and explorer windows and hit the "Fix checked" button.

Reboot when done and post another log please.

You da Man Crunchie. Looks like HOs is gone. Yes, Windows 98 does have a system 32 folder. I used Pocket KillBox and deleted the systr.dll from System32 folder.

I ran HJT and fixed as you said.

Everything seems to running normal. Below is my most recent HJT log.

Thanks again Crunchie. You were a huge help...

Well there you go. You learn something new every day :D. Never realised there was a system32 folder in 98. Thought it was only on NT systems.
