Hi.
Recently I have been unable to access one particular website.
There is nothing wrong with my internet connection, and there is nothing
wrong with the website in question, as I can reach it via other computers.
I have not installed anything on my pc since this problem other than
microsoft updates.
I am using Windows XP SP2, with IE6, using NTL Broadband . And my Cipher Strength is 128-bit.
I was already using SP2 before this problem started.
I have completed all of the listed NTL problem checks, ping test and netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt etc, and no problems seems visible. According to the ping test, I should have no trouble seeing the sight, but I always get, The page cannot be displayed. message.
I have done thorough virus scans using Mcafee and Adaware, and my system
seems pretty clean.
A colleague contacted the site host and they suggestedd trying a different
browser such as Firefox, which I did. I still cannot reach the same site.
The site in question is www.movievine.com
Again there seems to be no problem with the site, I have no trouble
reaching it from other machines, and I can reach any website from my own
machine except from this one.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yeah I'd tried this, still no Joy I'm afraid. As far as I know I've covered all the basic stuff such as clearing temp files, and ping tests. I've read in other forums people having the same problem, that they can't reach just one specific site, but they could before, and I've tried the things that straightened it out for them, those being listed in my first post.

My knowledge about such things is fairly limited, so I may still be overlooking something blatantly obvious. As Donald Sutherland said in Kelly's heros, 'I just ride in em, I don't know what makes em work'. That's me and pc's. :confused:

It's typical that THIS should be the only site I can't reach, as it's work related. :cry:

I've added a Hijackjack file in the hope that someone can spot something that might be causing this problem.

While I can't say that these are the source of your problem, your log does show indications of infection.


1. You should print out these directions, as you cannot have any web browsers open while performing the following HijackThis fixes.


2. With any/all web browsers closed, have HJT fix:

There is a valid "soundman.exe" file which is part of some Realtek sound card software, but there is also a malicious file of the same name.


3. Reboot into safe mode (you get to the safe mode boot option by hitting the F8 key as your computer is starting up)

- Open Windows Explorer, and in the Folder Options->View settings under the Tools menu, select "show hidden files and folders", and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and "Hide extentions for known file types".

- Delete the following files:
C:\WINDOWS\about.htm
C:\NAV_Update.exe

If you've detemined that the "soundman.exe" file is not part of your sound card software, locate and delete that file as well.
- Delete the following folder entirely:
C:\Program Files\AdStatus Service

- For every user account listed under C:\Documents and Settings, delete the entire contents of these folders (but not the folders themselves):

Important: One of the normal steps in eliminating malicious programs is to entirely delete the contents of all Temp folders. Given that, if any data that you care about is living in those Temp folders, you need to move it to a safe location now, or it will be erased along with everything else!

4. Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5

- Delete the entire content of your C:\Windows\Temp folder.

Note- If you get any messages concerning the deletion of system files such as desktop.ini or index.dat, just choose to delete those files; they'll be automatically regenerated by Windows if needed. Windows will allow you to delete the versions of those files which exist in sub-folders within the main Temp/Temorary folders, but might not let you delete the versions of those files that exist in the main Temp folders themselves; this is normal and OK.

- Disable XP's System Restore function. Instructions and explanation are here.

- Empty your Recycle Bin.

- Reboot normally.


4. Run HJT again and post a new log.

It is a Realtek sound card I have, so I did not remove the Soundman related files.
Still can't reach that site though. Incidentally I can't reach any of the sites from the same host. :(

The "AdStatus" infection still appears in your log. Did you follow my earlier reomoval instructions exactly and fully? Even if you did, AdStatus may be respawning itself.

Please do the following:

A) Run a full anti-virus scan, making sure that your anti-virus program is using the most current virus definition updates. Also run the free online virus scan at at least two of these sites:

1. Download and Install Ad-Aware SE, keeping the default options. However, some of the settings will need to be changed before your first scan

2.Close ALL windows except Ad-Aware SE

3. Click on the‘world’ icon at the top right of the Ad-Aware SE window and let AdAware SE update the reference list for the adware and malware.

4. Once the update is finished click on the ‘Gear’ icon (second from the left at the top of the window) to access the preferences/settings window

1) In the ‘General’ window make sure the following are selected in green:
*Automatically save log-file
*Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal
*Safe Mode (always request confirmation)

Under Definitions:
*Prompt to udate outdated definitions - set the number of days


2) Click on the ‘Scanning’ button on the left and select in green :

Under Driver, Folders & Files:
*Scan Within Archives

Under Select drives & folders to scan -
*choose all hard drives

Under Memory & Registry: all green
*Scan Active Processes
*Scan Registry
*Deep Scan Registry
*Scan my IE favorites for banned URL’s
*Scan my Hosts file


3) Click on the ‘Advanced’ button on the left and select in green:

Under Shell Integration:
*Move deleted files to recycle bin

Under Logfile Detail Level: (all green)
*include addtional object information
*DESELECT - include negligible objects information
*include environment information

Under Alternate Data Streams:
*Don't log streams smaller than 0 bytes
*Don't log ADS with the following names: CA_INOCULATEIT


4) Click the ‘Tweak’ button and select in green:

Under the ‘Scanning Engine’:
*Unload recognized processes during scanning
*Scan registry for all users instead of current user only


Under the ‘Cleaning Engine’:
*Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot


Under the Log Files:
*Include basic Ad-aware SE settings in logfile
*Include additional Ad-aware SE settings in logfile
*Please do not check or make green: Include Module list in logfile


5. Click on ‘Proceed’ to save the settings.

6. Click ‘Start’

*Choose:'Perform Full System Scan'
*DESELECT "Search for negligible risk entries", as negligible risk entries (MRU's) are not considered to be a threat.

7. Click ‘Next’ and Ad-Aware SE will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected and clean automatically.

8. If Ad-Aware SE finds bad entries, you will receive a list of what it found in the window

9. Save the log file when it asks and then click ‘finish’

10. REBOOT to complete the removal of what Ad-Aware SE found


* Run SpyBot.

When you first run SpyBot, it will walk you through a Wizard which will perform a few critical functions (making a registry backup, getting the latest updates, etc.).

1. Perform all of the Wizard's tasks.
2. Run the program. Once it completes, have it fix everything it finds.
3. Reboot.

C) Boot into Safe Mode again and:

- Open Windows Explorer, and in the Folder Options->View settings under the Tools menu, select "show hidden files and folders", and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files".

- For every user account listed under C:\Documents and Settings, delete everything inside the following folders (don't delete the folders themselves though):

1. Local Settings\Temp
2. Cookies
3. History
4. Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5

- Delete the entire content of your C:\Windows\Temp folder.

(If you get any messages concerning the deletion of system files such as desktop.ini or index.dat, just choose to delete those files; they'll be automatically regenerated by Windows if needed.)

- Empty your Recycle Bin and reboot normally.


D) Let us know what any of your scans found and/or fixed, and post a fresh HJT log.

Good news.

My ISP has helped me resolve the problem. It was a Proxy problem, they helped me online using NTL Medic.

I'm not entirely sure what they did, which is frustrating, but at least I know what channels to go through if it happens again.

Oddly though I still can't reach the site through Firefox, only through IE6.
Anyone have any ideas why?

Firefox has its own settings for Proxy configuration, which are separate from those used by IE.

I'm not familiar with NTL Medic, but you may be able to look at the Proxy settings in your Internet Options control panel and duplicate those in Firefox's settings:

Open the Internet Options control panel and go to Connections>Lan Settings. If you see Proxy configuration information there, try to replicate that information in Firefox's Tools>Options>General>Connection Settings window.

BTW, NTL Medic is a program for NTL customers that I just installed today. You can get it from the NTLworld.com website. It runs some standard connection tests on your pc, and lets you talk to support staff if the tests don't work. So it could be a good suggestion for other NTL users, who have connection problems like this. The standard tests didn't work for me, so a tech girl talked me through what to do until she figured it out.
