hi there I am new to this forum/site.

My computer has seemingly been infected by some type of hijacking software. Popups spring up constantly redirecting by Internet Explorer browser to about:blank and webforuser.com.

Is there anyone who can help me clean this up?

Here is the HIJack This log:

Hi and welcome to Daniweb Paul.

Go here to TrendMicro for an on-line scan & set it to autoclean for you. When it completes, post back the full filename of any files that cannot be cleaned or deleted.

Try this scan at Panda as well.

The scan here does not require an active X install, but uses java instead.
http://fr.trendmicro-europe.com/consumer/products/housecall_launch.php

You are running hijackthis from a temporary folder, can you please download the self-extracting zip version from here.
Uninstall the other version first, then manually delete the file.
Alternatively, you can create a folder in a permanent directory and move hijackthis to that folder.
Post back a new log when done.

HI Crunchie,

Thanks for the quick reply. It is worse then ever. The pop-ups are constant and I can't use explorer at all - I am using Firefox now. Here is the new HIJack log run from a regular folder (not temp). I could not get any of the other scanners you pointed me to to function properly. Where do I go from here?

Thanks,

Paul

Hi again. PLease do the following, then try the online scans again..

===============

We need to see if there are any program segments (prefetches) that may be present and are connected with the problems you are having. To do that, please do the following:

1) Click "Start | Search", then search for each of these program's base name(s), in all files and folders:

misb22.exe*
msqdevl.exe*
lssas.exe*
stisvsq.exe*
svshost.exe*
mservice.exe*
iau.exe*

2) Then if any are found in the 'prefetch' folder, delete them.

Look closely, since the 'base' name will have a bunch of random numbers and letters attached to it.

===============

Run HiJackThis then:

1. Click "Open the Misc Tools Section"
2. Click "Open Process manager"

-

Next, while holding down the CTRL key, locate (if present) and click on (highlight) each of the following:

c:\misb22.exe
C:\WINDOWS\msqdevl.exe
C:\WINDOWS\lssas.exe
C:\WINDOWS\stisvsq.exe
C:\WINDOWS\svshost.exe
C:\WINDOWS\mservice.exe
C:\WINDOWS\iau.exe

Now double-check and make sure that only those item(s) above are highlighted, then click "Kill process". Now, click "Refresh", check again, and repeat this step if any remain.

===============

Run HiJackThis and click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PCMService] "C:\Program Files\Dell\Media Experience\PCMService.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Internet Acceleration Utility] iau.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Internet Mail and News] msqdevl.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Management Console] lssas.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Internet Connection Wizard] stisvsq.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Games Acceleration] svshost.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Multimedia extensions] mservice.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Microsoft Internet Acceleration Utility] iau.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Internet Connection Wizard] stisvsq.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Games Acceleration] svshost.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Internet Mail and News] msqdevl.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Microsoft Management Console] lssas.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Multimedia extensions] mservice.exe

O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} (RdxIE Class) - http://software-dl.real.com/20751e4...ip/RdxIE601.cab

Now, with all windows closed except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

===============

Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure your able to "view system and hidden files/ folders:"

files...

c:\misb22.exe
C:\WINDOWS\msqdevl.exe
C:\WINDOWS\lssas.exe
C:\WINDOWS\stisvsq.exe
C:\WINDOWS\svshost.exe
C:\WINDOWS\mservice.exe
C:\WINDOWS\iau.exe

-

Note that some of these file(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them in "Safe Mode".

-

Reboot.

===============

To help protect your system from hostile ActiveX content, or special 'downloadable' files:

Download, install and keep updated, SpywareBlaster. If you've installed it for the first time:

1) Check for any available updates; if present, they'll be automatically downloaded and installed.
2) Next, "Enable all protection".
3) Exit the program.

-

Note: Remember to regularly check for updates.

===============

After rebooting your PC, post back a new log and let me know how everything goes.

HI Dani,

Thank you so much for the great help. This is a fantastic forum! I followed your directions and the pop-ups have disappeared, but Internet Explorer is still hijacked to About:blank upon start-up.

Do you have any further suggestions?

thanks again,

Paul

Hi Paul,

A couple of things:

1. There are usually more "R0" and "R1" entries in a HijackThis log, reporting things like Internet Explorer's default Home page, Search page, etc. It's possible that you may not have those entries in your particular log, be just to be sure: are you positive you're posting the full contents of your logs?

2. I don't see anything in your log which would indicate that a hijacker is still present.

- Does SpywareGuard pop up warnings that something is trying to reset your home page to about:blank, and if so, does it give the name of the program/process that is trying to do that?

- The about:blank setting may just be a leftover of the infection. If you go into your Internet Options control panel and manually set your home page to something other than about:blank, does that change "stick", or does something still try to change it back to about:blank?

HI Dani,

The about:blank problem seems have been resolved. SpyGuard popped up once, but that was to tell me that about:blank had been changed to google.com, my usual start page. I downloaded and used Hoster to effect the change.

Unfortunately this morning, I noticed there is one more pop-up remaining. It is the annoying What is your country? pop-up associated with the application c:/ misb22.exe.

I even chose the option in HiJackThis to delete the file on boot-up, but it still comes back. Even when searching for hidden files, I only come up with the misb22.exe file in the root directory.

Once I kill the process, it goes away until I re-boot the computer. Upon reboot, it appears again, with the application program again showing up in the root directory. Do you know of any sterilization proceedure for this one?

Thanks for the great help.

Best,

Paul

Always a good idea to do a scan immediately after booting and without making any changes to your system :).
As the c:\misb22.exe is not showing, I presume you have 'fixed' it?

Download the Pocket KillBox
Unzip the file to your desktop.
Run Pocket Killbox and paste the full file path of the below file in the box and click on Standard File Kill and End Explorer Shell While Killing File. Click on the button with the red circle and an X in the middle after you enter the file.

c:\misb22.exe

Reboot afterwards if the file is successfully deleted.

If the file is not deleted, do not reboot yet. Run Pocket Killbox again and paste the full file path in the box and click on Delete on Reboot. Next click on the button with the red circle and an X in the middle. You will get a message saying "File with be deleted on next reboot, Process and Reboot now?" Click "Yes" to reboot.

HI Dani,

Thanks for further assistance.

Unfortunately, after following the directions you sent with regard to Killbox, I still am plagued with this damnable misb22 fellow.

Here is a fresh HijackThis log, run immediately after my latest reboot:

Boot into Safe Mode

Run Pocket Killbox and paste the full path of this file in the box:

c:\misb22.exe

Click on Delete on Reboot. Next, click on the button with the red circle and an X in the middle. When you get the message saying File will be deleted on next reboot, Process and Reboot now?, click Yes to reboot (reboot normally).

Close any open browser windows, scan with HJT, and post a new log please.

1. misb22 has invited a friend to the party:

C:\WINDOWS\ibs55.exe

Repeat the Killbox procedure for the above file as well as C:\misb22.exe.

2. Turn off XP's System Restore feature.

3. I've got a feeling that you might have a hidden "mother file" that is spawning the .exe files. Please download the Silent Runners script, run it, and post the log it generates. The log will give us information about a few things that HijackThis doesn't report.

HI DL!

I did what you instructed.

I deleted misb22.exe upon reboot in Safe MOde.
It still popped up when I re-booted normally.

I then re-ran HJT. The only browser window open was the misb "please select your country" window.

Here is the HJT logfile:

Please do this also as it may help to remove those files.

Paul,

Were you able to use the Killbox to delete the C:\WINDOWS\ibs55.exe file?

Download the attached zip file and unzip fixme.reg. Close all browser windows. Double click to run it and when asked if you want to merge with your registry, answer yes.

Run Pocket Killbox again and paste the full file path of each of the below files in the box and click on Standard File Kill and End Explorer Shell While Killing File. Click on the button with the red circle and an X in the middle after you enter each file (see the files below).

C:\WINDOWS\ibs55.exe
c:\misb22.exe

Reboot afterwards if the files are successfully deleted.

If all files are not deleted, do not reboot yet. Run Pocket Killbox again and paste the full file path in the box and click on Delete on Reboot. Next click on the button with the red circle and an X in the middle. You will get a message saying "File with be deleted on next reboot, Process and Reboot now?" Click "Yes" to reboot only after the last file you enter.

Upon reboot, post another hijackthis and silent runners log please.

HI there!

I have not had a chance to get back to the computer. I will run killbox on ibs55 this evening.

I will post back then.

You folks are great! Thanks for all the help.

Best,

paul

HI Crunchie,

I think you did it!!!!!

I followed your instructions above and successfully deleted the two files. Was ibs55.exe some sort of mother file which kept spawning the misb22.exe files?

Did we smoke everything?

Thank you very much to all who helped me clean up this mess. This is super site. Please let me know if there is anything I can do for any of you. I am going to enable all the Spyware Blaster safeties as soon as I log off.

Best,

Paul

Was ibs55.exe some sort of mother file which kept spawning the misb22.exe files?

Actually, the type of "mother files" I was refering to are usually files with a ".dll" extension as opposed to an ".exe" extension, but the idea is still the same regardless of what type of file has actually caused the others to come back to life. When a malicious infection spawns more that one file, those files can act as "guardians" or "sentinels" for each other in the way that if one of them senses that someone/something has terminated the other, it will immediately issue a command to restart the one that was "killed".

I'll let cruchie and dlh 6213 respond to the rest of your questions, as theye've been your primary troubleshooters here.

Basically, you can remove most links in the Hijacking list which are not related to any programs you know installed on your system.

Uses restore option in hijack this if there are any entries deleted mistakenly.

Go to control penal to remove all search programs in there and run spybot to clean off the registry.

Check under current_user_root>software>Microsoft>windows>current version>run in registry editor and see if there are and .exe files in there you do not know . Remove them if there are any.

Sometimes, the .exe files you removed will come back after you reboot.

You have to boot up to safe mode to remove from there.

Hope this helps.

hi there I am new to this forum/site.

My computer has seemingly been infected by some type of hijacking software. Popups spring up constantly redirecting by Internet Explorer browser to about:blank and webforuser.com.

Is there anyone who can help me clean this up?

Here is the HIJack This log:

thank you all very much,

Paul

It sure looks like you 'smoked' everything :D. In this case it was probably a case of both files needing to be deleted at the same time. A lot of the newer infections now require that you nuke all entries related to it/them simultaneously.

HI Crunchie,

Thanks again for all the help. We defeated misb22, but now I keep getting the following in my SpyBot scans and some new popups:

Avenue A.
Advertising.com
FastClick
HitBox
MediaPlex

I get rid of them, but they keep coming back. I am assuming they are buried somewhere in the registry, or some other little nook, as I enabled Spy Gaurd and the SpyBot Immunization programs.

Here is a current HJT log: Any suggestions?

Paul
and here is the silent runners log:

It sure looks like you 'smoked' everything :D. In this case it was probably a case of both files needing to be deleted at the same time. A lot of the newer infections now require that you nuke all entries related to it/them simultaneously.

1. Download and install Ad-Aware SE, keeping the default options. However, some of the settings will need to be changed before your first scan

2.Close ALL windows except Ad-Aware SE

3. Click on the‘world’ icon at the top right of the Ad-Aware SE window and let AdAware SE update the reference list for the adware and malware.

4. Once the update is finished click on the ‘Gear’ icon (second from the left at the top of the window) to access the preferences/settings window

1) In the ‘General’ window make sure the following are selected in green:
*Automatically save log-file
*Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal
*Safe Mode (always request confirmation)

Under Definitions:
*Prompt to udate outdated definitions - set the number of days

2) Click on the ‘Scanning’ button on the left and select in green :

Under Driver, Folders & Files:
*Scan Within Archives

Under Select drives & folders to scan -
*choose all hard drives

Under Memory & Registry: all green
*Scan Active Processes
*Scan Registry
*Deep Scan Registry
*Scan my IE favorites for banned URL’s
*Scan my Hosts file

3) Click on the ‘Advanced’ button on the left and select in green:

Under Shell Integration:
*Move deleted files to recycle bin

Under Logfile Detail Level: (all green)
*include addtional object information
*DESELECT - include negligible objects information
*include environment information

Under Alternate Data Streams:
*Don't log streams smaller than 0 bytes
*Don't log ADS with the following names: CA_INOCULATEIT

4) Click the ‘Tweak’ button and select in green:

Under the ‘Scanning Engine’:
*Unload recognized processes during scanning
*Scan registry for all users instead of current user only

Under the ‘Cleaning Engine’:
*Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot

Under the Log Files:
*Include basic Ad-aware SE settings in logfile
*Include additional Ad-aware SE settings in logfile
*Please do not check or make green: Include Module list in logfile

5. Click on ‘Proceed’ to save the settings.

6. Click ‘Start’

*Choose:'Perform Full System Scan'
*DESELECT "Search for negligible risk entries", as negligible risk entries (MRU's) are not considered to be a threat.

7. Click ‘Next’ and Ad-Aware SE will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected and clean automatically.

8. If Ad-Aware SE finds bad entries, you will receive a list of what it found in the window

9. Save the log file when it asks and then click ‘finish’

10. REBOOT to complete the removal of what Ad-Aware SE found

Thanks Dani!

Over 200 new critical objects were found.

I ran Adaware twice. It still came up with a few nasties the second time around.

Here is my latest Adaware log (prior to my last re-boot):

thanks,

Paul

Empty your recycle bin.

Flush the system Restore Points.

Go to Start>Run and type msconfig Press enter.

When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
On the next page, click the System Restore Settings Link on the left.

Check the box labeled Turn off System restore.

Reboot. Go back in and Turn System Restore Back on. A new Restore Point will be created.

All previous restore points will be lost.

Here is an addendum to my last post:
It seems the nasties which are left include:

MediaPlex
Avenue A, Inc.
DoubleClick

Thanks,
P.

Boot into safe mode after updating adaware and do a full system scan with Adaware and delete what it finds.
