Hi. I just did a scan with hijackthis because my computer was having some hissy fits lately after the latest downloads from the microsoft update website. I think I finally figured out that it was my printer (HP) drivers that were causing the problems, but I also found an entry called cloaker.exe in my hp/bin folder. I wasn't sure what it was, and my search led me here. Anyway, following is my hjt log:

Please tell me if anything there doesn't look right, and if not, how do I fix it? I'm pretty new at troubleshooting with this computer, and it works so much slower than it did when I got it 2 years ago. I clean temp files and cookies every time I shut down the computer, but there are some temp files that just won't delete.

Thanks for your input and help in advance.
Cherryl

Hi Cherryl, welcome to DaniWeb :D

Please follow the suggestions and instructions in the links below to help prevent reinfections, start the cleanup process, and to find out a bit about HijackThis (like putting it in its own permanent folder).

When you've completed that, and moved HJT, please post a new log.

Since you have an HP printer, cloaker.exe is probably a legitimate file. But to make sure, you can locate the file, right-click on it, select Properties, and give us whatever info comes up (like Company, version, etc.).

Thank you for your help. I have followed the instructions, and here is the new HJT logfile.

Also I checked the file of cloaker.exe and it is by HP, so I guess it's ok. Thanks again

I figured cloaker was probably okay in your case. Scan with HJT and have it fix the following entries:

Close any open windows, other then HijackThis, and hit Fix checked.

Reboot, close any open browser windows, scan with HJT, and post a new log please. Is your computer still having hissy fits?

Here is the new HJT file. I hope everything is ok now. The computer is running ok at this point (no more hissy fits lol) but it takes forever to boot. I'm wondering if there are some programs loading on startup that I can delete or stop without causing problems to my system.

Your log looks clean to me :)

Try running Disk defragmentor, this may help your system run a bit faster if you haven't run it for awhile.

As far as Startup items, I don't know what you want running on Startup and what you don't. From your log, I would say MS Office, MS Money, and Quicken could be removed from Startup.

Go to www.blackviper.com for a complete rundown on what can and cannot be disabled in Windows.
