Can't get rid of this sucker!

Microsoft Security Essentials is the only antivirus that has detected it and "deletes" it every time if pops back in but for some odd reason it can't completely get rid of it. Malwarebytes has just detected after I reinstalled and I am posting log =)

Before posting I started running Windows MRT and because it has been running for over two hours I didn't want to stop it. So far it hasn't found anything. I don't know if this affects the outcome of the log I am about to post.

I was unable to successfully run Gmer. As soon as I clicked on it to run, my computer crashed twice.

Every time I open Firefox or IE an advertisement opens itself on a new tab. I forgot to mention that Bitdefender (now uninstalled) as well as MSE are the only two programs that have detected the Adware Trojan. MSE "deletes" the threat but it keeps creeping up over and over and over. It has stopped it as Adware win32 and as Trojan Win32

You have a rootkit on the computer please do the following:
Please read carefully and follow these steps.

* Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
http://support.kaspersky.com/downloads/utils/tdsskiller.zip
* Extract its contents to your desktop.
* Once extracted, open the TDSSKiller folder and doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then on Start Scan.

* If an infected file is detected, the default action will be Cure, click on Continue.

* If a suspicious file is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.

* It may ask you to reboot the computer to complete the process. Click on Reboot Now.

* If no reboot is required, click on Report. A log file should appear. Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
* If a reboot is required, the report can also be found in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt". Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

Hi,

I have to say that I was unable to run it yesterday and had to MBR. After MBR I ran combofix but the problem continues.

Today however I tried it once again and ran it successfully, below the results:

Can you more fully explain this statement:
I have to say that I was unable to run it yesterday and had to MBR
and what you did exactly.
Now please continue with the steps found in our Read Me sticky, beginning with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware.
http://www.daniweb.com/hardware-and-software/microsoft-windows/viruses-spyware-and-other-nasties/threads/134865
Post back with all logs.

I tried to run this same application yesterday (TDSS) but once it got to 80% in the initializing phase it gave me an error. Instead I ran the MBR successfully. Then I ran combofix and that's about all I did. Problem persisted.

Today I read your reply to my cry for help and gave the TDSSkiller a try. Unlike yesterday, it managed to get by the 80% and run successfully (which is what I posted for you).

Can I ask you where did you get your FIRST copy of TDSS that you ran earlier only went to 80% and stopped?
Then where did you get the MBR that you ran?
Finally, did you reuse the original copy you ran for the log posted or did you use the linked zip file from my post to you?
This really is for my own information and for future reference for me.

the MBR i think i got it from public.avast.com
the TDSS from kapersky.com

and no, I deleted the first TDSS and re-installed the one you posted =)

btw - malwarebyes is still running as soon as it is done I will post the results =)

After a couple of hours, here's the malwarebytes log =)

Yes, I wanted to see the one you ran yesterday to see what was removed.
Now run this program:
Run the ESET Online Scanner

http://www.eset.com/us/online-scanner?i_agree=14
* You can use Internet Explorer or you may use Firefox to complete this scan and you will need to allow an Active X to be installed
* You will need to temporarily Disable your current Anti-virus program.
* Be sure the option to Remove found threats is checked and the option to Scan unwanted applications is Checked.
* When you have completed that scan, a scanlog ought to have been created and located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt.

Post back with the log.

Hi,

This is strange, I sent you two messages and none appear =/

In any case, ESET finished scanning after a zillion hours and found 2 "infected" files. I looked for the log in the Eset file but there was no log there. Only the executable program and the active x ocg

Did you reboot after doing ESET? The log should be in there. C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\

I rebooted and no log =/

When you open the ESET ONLINE SCANNER folder does it look like my attachment?

Nop! I only see the executable file and the active X

you need to run it again. There is a chance it didn't fix. It often will only produce a log if the scanner has been told to clean and remove. There whould also be a Quarantine folder in there if it removed something. Make sure you have ALL your security programs turned off when using ESET

Mmmmm I remember ticking the option at the end of the scan to delete quarantined items

Sorry, but the scan was not done right if as you said it took "zillions of hours" with hard drives the size of yours it should only take a couple hours at most, and both drives should have been scanned. Sinc you only have the executable file and the activeX in the folder then it doesn't even appear to have been fully installed as other files, in addition to those two files would be in there. As you can see by my attached image there should be a lot more files in there including the uninstaller and the txt log.

Since I don't know the names and locations of the items found I have no way of knowing what needs to be done. So you will have to run several additional scans
Please run the following, have them remove if possible, some may not give that option but only show names and locations of infected files then we would need other tools to remove them so be sure to save the logs. Post back here with all the logs:

http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx

http://www.f-secure.com/en_US/security/security-lab/tools-and-services/online-scanner/

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

http://www.bitdefender.com/scanner/online/free.html

ok let me run these other ones and will post the results =)

Thanks for your patience

Hi again,

Sorry it took me so long to reply. I had to go out of town and left sicko laptop behind. I have just gotten back and performed all scans you recommended. Where can I get the logs of the free online ones?

Since I don't know what scans you ran I cannot tell you that for sure. Were you given an option to save logs when you ran the scans? What did the scans find? It infected files were found did you tell the scanners to remove the infections?

I ran all of them. The online ones did not give me the option to get a report (that I can recall).

The ones that had the option to remove threats, I selected the option. These were the online ones though so I don't think they left a log behind.

And the Eset... I know what I did last time and again this time around (as I cannot find the file). I think I select to uninstal after finishing the scan.

As far as I can remember I think all scans have come up with 0 infections.

Is the computer acting normally? I am at a disadvantage here since you have no logs, I really can't say if the computer is clean or not.

jholland,

I am so sorry about not having any logs for you =( you have been very patient and extremely helpful.

Yes, computer is acting normal. From what I read right after each scan onscreen, there were 0 threats found with each of the scans.

I have both malware and MSE installed and MSE was the one to detect the problem. Even after running the first full scan, malware detected 0 and MSE kept prompting me that there was a threat and treated it. Quick question as I am curious, why is it that so many people recommend malwarebytes?

Thanks =)

Hey arcybarrios,
Thats good if the computer is acting normal but still for the confirmation you can try SUPERANTISPYWARE which can be downloaded free from the cnet.com
If this comes up with zero infections then I believe the computer is properly cleaned.
Before running the scan dont forget to check for updates of virus definations.
Best of luck,
will be looking for your reply.
Cheers!!

If you will note, Malwarebytes' DID remove Trojans as shown in your very first log posted from it.
MSE may have been detecting the problem but it was not removing it, an anti-virus program is not configured to remove Trojans, Malwarebytes' is and does as it did on your system. Malwarebytes' is absolutely the top of the line with these types of infections. If MSE had removed it then it would not have kept finding it. You had a rootkit on the system, this is why it kept coming back, that is what a rootkit does, continually brings back in the same infections until the rootkit itself is removed. Rootkits must be removed by using special tools and the TDSKiller removed it from your system. Once that was gone then all of the other infections could easily be removed. Now you also ran the MBR tool from Avast which then allowed the TDSSKiller to finally run. Combofix did also remove some things for you but until the TDSSKiller was run to finally remove the rootkit the computer couldn't have been fully clean.
I also think that you need to Uninstall MSE and download and install a new copy of it because your DDS log showed that it had been somewhat damaged by the infections. So you need a new copy.
Then run it one more time to be sure things are clean and post back with the results. We are almost finished just a step or two more after the MSE and you have done a superb job.

Ok so, I uninstalled and re-installed. I then ran it and this is what it found =(
