Critical System Error...help!

I have been blessed with the (seems to be a mass quanity of people) ad-aware pop up/virus. It is located on the bottom right task bar and fluctuate from a yellow triangle with a exclamation mark inside to a what apperas to be a underwater explosive mine, the message it displays is "Critial System Error" when right or left clicked will go to the "virus Bursters" web page, of course I have not played with the buttons on the web page but this is extremly annoying. I have downloaded two or three different ad-aware removers and as well tried to manually remove it...no go! Although it apperas to be just annoying I do belive it will probable, if left unattended open some ports and let some more vicious items in..I have read some of the other blogs and downloaded HJT and have cut and pasted my log...looking for guidance.

It seems that this little malware hides itself pretty good. because i compared your log with another person who had the same problem and there were no similarities. However you do have some other nasties we can get rid of.

First run HJT and place a checkmark next to the following.

You might want to print out the following directions because you cant access the internet in safe mode.

Now reboot to safe mode by tapping F8 during start up and selecting safe mode.

Delete the following files/folders using my computer and the delete key.

C:\Program Files\VirusBurster\

Now reboot back to normal.

Post a new HJT log and tell me if the thing is still there.

I've seen that error that nasty little bug that you are talking about--or at least a few variations of it. It appears to be a variaton on the old spyaxe malware. Ah how I hate it(and its variants)! To remove this pesk, here are the directions to follow.

In normal(non-safe) mode:

Download and run the smitRem execuatable to extract the files to location that you will be able to easily find them. SmitRem can be found here: http://noahdfear.geekstogo.com/

Download and install crap cleaner. http://ccleaner.com/

Turn system restore off. If you need directions, you can find them here: http://armentpau.com/archives/basic-tips/disabeling-system-restore

Reboot your computer into safe mode with networking. Inside of safe mode with networking, do the following.

1) Run Crap Cleaner. This will erase all the temporary files floating around your system

2) Run Ewido. Go to Ewido.net and run the online scan. If you are a Mozilla Firefox user(and why not?) you will be asked to download a small portable scanner. Download and run the file.

3) Navigate to where smitRem is located and run the file RunThis.bat and follow the on screen instructions.

Yeah, working for a college, you get to learn all of these nasties very quickly and what they look like. Students can pick up these pieces of spyware and not even know where they got it from. Ah. Spyware. Its what keeps me employed. I feel torn. Should I be thanking the spyware makers?
