registry help please

i think i read all the forums and rules, so hopefully i am posting this ok. if not im sorry ahead of time. :sad:

i am having problems with my computer. im on xp. its not been acting right, but adaware, avg, norton, and pc cillian thing say im clean. when i click on my task manager, and look at processes, it says all zeros. it used to say like ie was 18k, messanger was 3k, etc. if i switch users on the computer, the task manager there is fine. your other forum posts suggested the hijackthis thing. so i DLed it. i can post the log file from when i did a scan, but i have deleted the hjt because one forum said to do this: Unzip HJT into it's own permanent folder before doing anything in order for it to create backups. (Not a temporary folder or the desktop & not directly on your hard drive).
erm, i dont know what that means. if someone could tell me where to put the thing, i will. i had it in my program files when i did the scan.

any help you give i will be eternally thankful for!

Unzip HJT into it's own permanent folder before doing anything in order for it to create backups. (Not a temporary folder or the desktop & not directly on your hard drive).

The reason for the above is because the majority of users have hijackthis running from a temporary folder. When hijackthis creates backups of the fixes it does, those backups reside in the same folder as itself. When the temp folder is cleaned out (as often is done during the clean up process of doing these logs) all the backups are deleted too! If something goes wrong, there is nothing to go back to. So, provided that hijackthis is in it's own folder where the backups can go, & it's not in a temporary folder, you can put it where-ever you wish. Like this; C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents\Hijackthis\hijackthis.exe good
C:\Hijackthis\hijackthis.exe good
C:\Program Files\Hijack this\HijackThis.exe good

C:\hijackthis.exe bad (because the backups will be scattered all over the hard drive)
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Hijackthis\hijackthis.exe bad (Even though hijackthis is in it's own folder, it is also in a temporary folder)
C:\temp\Hijack this\HijackThis.exe bad

Where you have yours is (obviously) good :) .

You should also not be running two anti virus programs at the same time. They can cause conflicts. You should stop one from starting at boot-up & use it as an on-demand scanner.

The following may not fix your problem but needs to be done;
Close all (browser) windows & rescan with hijackthis. When the scan is finished place a check in the box to the left of the following entries & click 'fix checked':

Hi again & thank you for the compliments. But please don't tell my daughter I am a sweetie or she really will have me wrapped around her finger lol :).
I too had Norton Firewall which I didn't find to be too bad apart from the fact that it used a lot of system resources. Now though, I do prefer Sygate. Runs at about 10Mb usage & works very well.

Just fix this with hijackthis & you will be good.

Clear out your Temporary internet files and other temp files.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel >Internet Options.
Under the General tab click the Delete temporary internet files,
delete all Offline content as well. Clear out Cookies.

Also, go to Start > Find/search > Files or folders > in the named box, type: *.tmp and choose Edit > select all -> File > delete.

Empty/delete the entire contents of the C:\Windows\temp folder and C:\temp folder, if you have one. (Contents but not the folder itself.)

This one too if Win2K or XP.
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\

Empty the Recycle Bin.

i think i did everything you asked! the temp files were tricky for me. one had a lot in it! LOL

and i will try that firewall. i liked norton, but it DOES take a lot of resources to run!

i asked the windows forum people about the weird zeros in task manager, but i want to fix it. lol not redo my computer. ill just live with zeros hehehe :cheesy:
