Windows 2000 start menu problem

Hi to everyone,

i have this computer which a friend of mine gave me as a gift it has windows 2000, but when you click on start, the menu shows but if you click it won't allow to do anything, you can not click on anything, the menu stays there but doesn't allow you to do anything, what i had noticed is that if put the cursor on top of programs and press esc then programs will be highlited, i have to shut down my computer by pressing alt+f4 or running the task manager can someone help me please???

is there any processos running in task manager that eats up cpu usage. you can run a chkdsk and virus scan and check how it behaves after that

the processes on the task manager they all look fine, I ran chkdsk and it fixed some problems but still is doing the same thing, I was thinking that it could be a registry problem, don't you think???

download trend micro's DOS application here (2.1MB) and the two essential pattern files namely lptXXX and sspdaX_XX(X means latest versions)witch you can find at the same site

extract/install the DOS application and the files in a temp folder(all inthe same folder) in the root of local disk,now go into safe mode and run the DOS application

Yep, first thing is to check for bugs, as sittas pointed out. But your explorer shell is broken. Try this also...
To fix the explorer shell:
You could save this to your desktop. If it will not run by dclicking then run it from task manager by inputting its pathname. The entries should be valid... but it's too long for me to check them all. The way regsvr works is that if it does not recognise a name it just ignores it.
