I have a current (I think-Auto-update is enabled) XP home Compaq Laptop.
I try to shut it down and it all goes well until it comes to the 'power off'. I believe it does shutdown but does not power down.
I've been to <msconfig> and have eliminated all the running programs there to no avail. No programs are checked in the 'startup' list and only McAfee is checked on the 'services' list.
I've studied through <services.msc> and stopped all programs I thought unnecessary.
I just tried to "clear the Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power check box" in the USB Root Hub under computer devices. (This was advised on the 'net by Microsoft). Again no deal.
I've pored over my power settings; all I can find there is a hibernation control.
When I go into <msconfig>, I get a 'not allowed' message when I make changes (they do get changed anyway).
It has the same problem fron the 'SAFE' startup mode.
Can you help me make my computer act normal; it did a until couple of weeks ago; I've had it, maybe, two years.
