is there a way to get the system to recognize this? ITs an APPLE I pod & XP...>>?

You have to insert the Ipod setup cd first. The setup dialog will instruct you when to insert the Ipod.

The cd tray will accommodate that size. Open the tray. You will see the middle is slightly sunken for smaller cds.
