I am with a user whose PC has lost all file associations, tho' it seems to be able to start and run certain things (IExplorer for instance).
I have various .reg patches to apply (from www.dougknox.com) but since the PC doesn't even know how to open Regedit I am stuck.
Doug suggested renaming regedit.exe to a .com .scr etc. but none of those are recognised extensions either!
Can anyone suggest a way I can break this loop so I can apply a patch?

Have you tried windows repair?
Well I had run the repair beforehand because the PC was in a worse state originally. I too thought it should have restored the associations too.
However I have since posting here found a solution.
To get a DOS window open when the file associations refuse to recognise command.COM.
Hit Cntl-Alt-Del, which as you know gets you the Task Manager
Then click File
Then, whilst holding Cntl, click New Task and hey presto a DOS window appears.
I was then able to enter regedit and the registry editor appeared and I was home free! I could import the patches for .reg first(!) and then .exe, .com etc.

I found a way to fix this problem (it did for me) on another board...
copy and paste all below into a file then save as XPEXE.Reg, save to desktop then double click and allow merge to registry reboot and all should be well.
