I have my resumes on the desktop. For some reason, I am getting the TILDA symbol on the first character of the file name and I have no idea why....Can anyone elaborate on why this might occur and what I can do to avoid it ?

Did you save the same file multiple time? Can you access the file? Try open the file and save it under a new filename. Because time each you save a file it will do a back up of that file so that could have cause a TILDA on the filename.
