whenever i try to disconnect from net my pc locks up! any ideas?
(please) Dsl connection 1Mb onboard sound & graphics 512 memory 2.6 intel processor

What do you mean by "disconnect from the net"? Most DSL connections are always on. Does the problem occur when you close Internet Explorer (or whatever browser you're using)?

sorry what I meant was: if Itry to use any applications whilst connected the machine freezes, Ihave discovered that it is something called svchost.exe
so if I end that process then all is ok. but what is it and what does it do.
Ps removed IE and now using firefox
