Recently when I opened Windows Search the blue are on the left of the screen, where one enters what one is searching for, is empty except the animated dog.

What operating system are we talking about? Also how are you using Windows Search? Is it from All programs, or in a Windows Explorer Window?

Op sys. :Win XP pro
from Windows Explorer

If you are talking about the built in "Search" function of Windows XP Explorer, it would be in the right corner. Also if you go to Services, there should be a Service for the Search.

Now if you are talking about the add-in version for Windows Live, that is a whole different ballgame. This is what I think that you are talking about http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=23 The other one is this http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=3382 Then there is the Bing Desktop search
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35844

Normally in Windows XP, indexing takes care of search in Windows Explorer, if you do not have one of the three I linked above installed. Which of the two looks like the one that you are dealing with?

See this http://www.mydigitallife.info/turn-off-and-disable-search-indexing-service-in-windows-xp/ regarding disabling Indexing in XP. See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/913503 regarding Search not working.

Downloaded your suggested "details.aspx". Works great. Thanks mucho.

Which of the links fixed the problem? The Microsoft fixit, or just downloaded Windows Search 4.0?
