I am so impressed looking around at the vast knowlegde you guys have. I have chosen you as I am certain you know more than alot of the other forum users.

Machine - Vaio VGN FE31Z
Intel core duo, 2gb ddr,200gb hd,1.83 Intel speedstep, Proc t5600
Soft - Itunes, MSN messenger, Canon Printer wireless, 3 month office 2003 trial, pre installed windows xp from box.

Problems -

Main problems

Task Bar, blue thing at the bottom turns from blue to grey and fonts change as if the machine is entering some kind of safe mode. This happens when I select Start, or Open Outlook or IE, or MSN messenger.

Windows update installer from Microsoft update hangs and never shows available updates or fixes. I have re registered a number of dlls but still no joy.

Occasionally speakers ( Bose companion 5 USB system ) stops working, speaker icon in task bar shows no speakers or sound devices installed.

Very slow start up, Slow application loading IE IE, Outlook, Word etc

Occasionally will not connect to wireless router on start up therefore no internet. Whereas the other OLDER Vaio does and works flawlessly.

Generally feels unwell and not upto the brand new standard of perfection I expect.

I have run your advised scans and here they are:

Hope to owe you a beer.

Sounds like you need to backup format and reinstall to me hehe. When you have this many problems on your computer your best bet is to start again.I myself would not even bother to fix that many problems when a format and reinstall will do exactly the same thing and without the excess stress. Prrobably not the answer you were looking for but a solution nun the less. GL!

Oh and its probably not good to use Emule either . Those programs are always trouble..

OMG I appreciate that.... I was rather hoping for some " ok go to run type dhjsdhla.ddl, remove and click the third option in the protocol, and then double click wywywig.dsfg icon and youre done"

I'm not gonna lie to ya, your HJT log is a whole helluva mess. I can understand if you can't reinstall.

If this is the case, we'll start with a full AVG scan. I see you did that already, so that is easy. Second, see what Ad-Aware catches. You may have to system scan two, or even three times to get everything. After that, we can move on to the possibility of you having a rootkit.

A rootkit is a virus that will hide from antivirus programs by masking itself as a protected system file. the program Rootkit Revealer will scan your active processes for potential rootkits. DO NOT automatically delete anything that it finds, because it shows all the real protected processes. Google every process, and follow deletion instructions for any rootkits you may have.

Now, run another antivirus scan, and adware scan. The reason for this, is because the rootkit may have been keeping different viruses or adware from being detected. If any of it cannot be deleted, then you will need another free program called Killbox. With killbox, you can take a process and mark it, then when you restart, killbox deletes it before it can start up and protect itself.

once all your scans are clean, run a disk cleanup and a defrag, i'll bet your hard drives are a bit messy. finally, that's it. Your system should be normalized. You can apply the settings you want, do what you need to.

But, to prevent this from ever happening again, I would begin to follow these simple steps:

1. don't click random email links.
2. don't visit 'seedy' sites on the internet
3. set proper security settings, and don't break them.
4. set a day to backup your data, update all your security programs, and run system scans.

I was once in your boat, and I started following those rules, haven't had a major problem since.

Wow, I have to agree, that is one huuuuge logfile.
If I had one that big, I would have picked up my computer and thrown it out the window.
