desktop won't load - HJT log & AVG reports included

Hi All,

I'm new to the forum and I hope I have done everything right to now post this HJT log and AVG report.

Not sure when the problem started, about two weeks ago, I logged in and found the desktop would not load. I get the backgroud picture and that's it. I can start new tasks, specifically explorer to start applications.

I tried to go back to a restore point but I don't have one old enough. All information on this forum says to run AVG and get a report and then run Hijack this. I've done that. files are attached.

Please download Qoofix by RubbeR DuckY from http://www.malwarebytes.org/Qoofix.zip

1. Unzip all files to a convenient location such as C:\Qoofix.
2. Go to the folder you unzipped all files and run Qoofix.exe.
3. Click Begin Removal and wait for the scan to finish.
4. If an infection has been found, select yes to restart your computer.

Finally post a new Hijack This log and the contents of the Qoofix logfile.

Please PASTE your log, not attach.

Okay, strange, or maybe not. I posted the above reply and then logged off my user in XP. I sat back down 5 minutes later to check something else, logged in and guess what? The desktop icons, start and toolbar are back in place. I guess Qoofix did do something. Thank you!!!

Yep, could tell by looking at both your hijackthis logs :).

Can you please do the following.

Can you disable Windows Defender as it may interfere with the removal process. Please leave it disabled until your PC has been given the all clear.

• Open Windows Defender
• Click Tools
• Click General Settings
• Scroll down to Real Time Protection Options
• Uncheck Turn on Real Time Protection (recommended)
• After you uncheck this, click on the Save button
• Close Windows Defender

Move HiJackThis to it's own folder; like c:\HJT. When we're done 'cleaning' off your system, we're going to 'flush' the temporary folders which, with HiJackThis in it's current location, we'll lose both the program and the backups it creates. These backups are important in case we need to restore any 'fixed' entry(s) later.

Also move the "Backups" folder, for HiJackThis, if present.

Thanks for the detailed instructions for further clean up. It's now 9am EDT Monday and I can't get to this until after work. I'll follow these instructions tonight and post the results.

I ran through the instructions you posted. All went well. I disabled Defender, I moved hijackthis to c:\HJT MyWebSearch was not present when I went to add/remove software. I placed a check and remove all recommended items and hit "fix this" in hijackthis. c:\windows\system32\begxcjy.dll was not found. I did find and delete alcxmntr.exe. I do have spyblaster now installed and enabled. Here is the new hijackthis log:

No worries. There are a couple of other entries there I am concerned about, so can you run hijackthis and hit the Open the Misc Tools Section and then the Open Uninstall Manager.

Then hit the Save List button. Save to the desktop for easy access. Open the log file and copy the entire list and paste it here please.

Ok. Can you go to add/remove programs and uninstall all of the following;

Do not reboot!!

Download and run this uninstaller:
http://www.outerinfo.com/OiUninstaller.exe

Tutorial for the uninstaller, if needed.

Once you have done that, reboot your pc and go into the Program Files folder and delete these folders if found;

Reboot again.

Uninstall Spybot S&D 1.3 and update to version 1.4.

Install MVPS HOSTS:

Download and unzip hosts.zip from HERE to a folder (hosts).

When you get a chance please read more about what we are doing HERE.

Here's a Tutorial on how to install it, but it's installed like this:

Open up the hosts folder and double-click on the mvps.bat file, it will rename your present HOSTS file to HOSTS.MVP, then it will copy the new HOSTS file to the correct location on your machine. It happens very quickly so don't blink!

Please note that a large HOSTS file (over 135 kb) may slow down the machine. This only occurs in W2K and XP.

To fix this:
Go to Start > Run (type) services.msc > OK
Scroll down to DNS Client, Right-click and select: Properties
Click the drop-down arrow for "Startup type"
Select: Manual, click Apply/Ok and restart.

If you want to restore MS original hosts file after you're clean....
Download HostsXpert and unzip it to your desktop.
Open HostsXpert that you earlier unzipped on your desktop
Click "Make Hosts Writable?" upper right corner (if available)
Click "Restore Microsoft's Original Hosts File" and then click OK
Close HostsXpert

Okay, here are the results after following your instructions:

Everything went find through the OiUninstaller.exe step.

I then opened the Program Files folder and found and deleted the following folders: assembly, fonts, fonts and tasks. I must admit that I didn't understand why the file folder names you gave me had question marks in the name. I didn't find a?sembly but I did find assembly so I deleted that file. The onlyl folder that I found that I did not delete was Symantec. I have Norton installed (you know that :)) and I thought I should leave that alone. If that was not right, let me know and I'll repeat the steps you gave me.

I next uninstalled Spybot 1.3 and installed 1.4. Swapping out the hosts file for the MVPS was easy. I switched from Automatic to Manual as you suggested with services.msc.

hmmm? I see at the tail end of the find.bat file the folder names with the question marks. I did not find any of these in the Program Files folder. I'll just wait for your reply.

I see what I did wrong. I didn't look to the bottom of the Program Files folder. I found all the other folders, tasks, symantec, security, symbols, microsoft.net (twice) and oracle. I deleted all those folders. Not sure if you need this again but redid the uninstall list, the hijackthis log and find.bat. They are listed here:

Things are running MUCH better. I have been able to follow your logic in cleaning this up and it is very interesting how all this cat and mouse game of spyware and cleanup works. Thank you very much for sticking with this for 4 days.

You are welcome :).

Now that your PC is clean you need to follow these easy steps to keeping it this way:

Download CCleaner and install, then run it. It will clear out your temp folders.

1. Uncheck "Cookies" under "Internet Explorer".
2. Click on Run Cleaner in the lower right-hand corner. This can take quite a while to run.
3. Close when finished.

Secure your Internet Explorer by going here and following the instructions there.

Better yet, use an alternative browser! Download FireFox and give it a run. It is far more secure than Internet Explorer. Or, you can get Opera which in my opinion, is better still.

Use a firewall to help prevent your PC's control being usurped by undesireables. There is a link to a good, free firewall in my signature.

Install and keep updated, AVG anti-spyware, Ad-Aware SE and Spybot S&D.
Run them all on a regular basis, following the maker's recommendations.

Install an anti-virus. There are some good, free AV's available today. Make sure that it is updated regularly and have it scan your system often.

Check for Windows Updates. Microsoft regularly post updates for your systems safe running. Make sure to take advantage of this. Reboot when installed and return to make sure there are no others.

Empty the Recycle Bin.

For XP users.
After something like this it is a good idea to Flush the Restore Points and start fresh.
To flush the XP system Restore Points.

Go to Start>Run and type msconfig. Press enter.

When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
On the next page, click the System Restore Settings link on the left.

Check the box labelled 'Turn off System restore'.

Reboot. Go back in and Turn System Restore Back on. A new Restore Point will be created.

Note that all previous restore points will be lost.
