Refer to "valid file name" and mark this as solved.

dewabo 16 Junior Poster

Favorites are not in the documents folder.
What I did was downloaded chrome as my wed blowser and all those lost favorites were there. This was after I had downloaded IE9 and those favorites were still in no fine land. Well I don't like IE9 at all but was trying to move my favorites from chrome to IE9 and kept getting "not valid name".I was trying to import them to IE9.Tryed to save them to a flash drive from chrome and couldn't.
Sense I don't like IE9, I unstalled IE9 and tryed to download IE8 back, would you folks belive this, but Windows 7 comes with IE8 preinstalled but if you try to download it back on to Windows7, it says it is uncompatible with Windows 7. Microsoft has some real genus' working there.
To end this nightmare, system started act funny and then crashed, so I had to do a full recovery and lost everything, so now I'm back to surfing the web trying to fine those lost links.
Guess you could mark this as solved.

dewabo 16 Junior Poster

C:\Users\Tag-a-long\Documents\favorites.html
why is that not a valid file name? how do you do a valid file name?

dewabo 16 Junior Poster

Renaldo, all that does is show me what is there now, I can't find my orginal list of favorites, and windows7 is nothing like XP.I have even used the virtual machine with XP to look for them to no avail. they are there and they are not there.

dewabo 16 Junior Poster

when you click favorites under veiw all it does it adds a toolbar with your favorites listed.

dewabo 16 Junior Poster

This goes back to "lost favorites" after microsoft did away with the links bar, have learned that the links have been hidden, they are still there just can't fine them.I'm using Windows7 Pro and IE8. Have searched for them everywhere and can't fine them, and microsoft is of little use on how to find all the links that I had,and when I find a link that I had and try to add it to my favorites I get a window that says that the link is already there and wants to know if I want to overwrite it and if i say yes it too just disappears into the land of the lost.
Have done a recovery twice and still no joy.Have searched microsoft help forums and no help there.
Can anyone in Daniland help me find my way?

dewabo 16 Junior Poster

OK folks here's what I've found out, Microsoft added the favoriters bar to replace the links menu, and when they did it hid everything you have under favorites. It didn't delete your favorites it just hid them without telling you where or how to recover them. So once again Microsoft has screwed us.Without giving us the option of downloading new favorites bar, they did it as an update to IE8.
Lucky for me I had a lot of my favorites saved to a flash drive and had to copt\paste them to the new favorites bar, but I still have lost some that will take time to find again.
I guess we can mark this as solved, thanks to those who responded, your help and ask.com solved this one. Thanks guys and gails.

dewabo 16 Junior Poster

It opens on a single left click. Folks I have been all over this computer and can't find then, but if I try to add something to favorites that should be there, it ask if I want to over write it, It is as if they are there and not there at the same time. This could drive a person to drink.

dewabo 16 Junior Poster

that's not the best picture but you can see what I see under favorites.

dewabo 16 Junior Poster

I did what y'all asked me to, and under c:\users\myname\favorites the only thinf there is that favorites bar.

dewabo 16 Junior Poster

How do you take a screen shot?

dewabo 16 Junior Poster

Under the favorites bar, it is blank, nothing but this "favorites bar" which I didn't put there.Click on it and it gives you a blank page, and says file is empty.
I just did what Oalee said and nothing changed.

dewabo 16 Junior Poster

I have lost my favorites menu in ie8 and can't seem to find it. When I try to add aomething to my favorites that was there, it tell me the file is already there, and will ask if I want to over write it.
My OS is windows7pro.
I have restored twice and the same thing, no list in the favorites menu, and I can't find anything yet on the web as to how to get it back with windows 7.
Thank you all for any help you can give.

Called Verizon support yesterday and we came to the conclusion that there was no drives for the phone. Took it back to the Verizon store today and exchanged it for another phone. What peed me off the most was the fact that the rep. who sold it to me said I could hook it to my computer and download my pictures which was a lie.
In windows 7 when you connect something like a phone, it doesn't give you that "what do you want to do" window like xp did. You have to go to control panel and open devices and printer folder to find it, and then it doesn't give the drive it is connected to, so you have to hunt for it.
Thanks for the assist guys.

This may not be the place for this, but I want to know if there is a way to download pictures from my phone to my computer without sending them as a picture message. When I got the phone I was told that all I needed was a data cable that would fit the phone. Well I got a data cable and tryed it and the computer doesn't see the phone at all. This is a samsung salute phone, I don't text so I only get basic phone service. Hope someone here can help me out here. have some pictures of my boys (two Pom puppies) that I would like to keep.

Thanks for any help.dewabo

By any chance did you make a recovery disc when you first got this computer? If you did, then there is your proble solver. Use this to boot windows in safe mode and go on line and download those antivirus programs and run them. If you can't get on line with that computer in safe mode, use a flash drive and download those program from another computer to the flash drive.

I use Mircosoft's Security Essentials as my primary antivirus and keep Malwarebytes and Superantispyware as backup security programs. They are all free and do fairly well protecting my computer.MSE runs a scan every night(if I leave the computer on) and about twice a month I run the other two just to on the informed side of things.Besides I'm cheap. Now I just need to find a good Free regeristery program

Go to Malwarebytes.com and SuperAntispyware and download their free programs and do a scan. these are two of the best anti spyware programs that i know of. Mircosoft used SuperAntispyware on a computer I was having trouble with and it scaned everything, pictures, music, document, mem. ac well as any drives that was on the computer.
Malwarebytes does a real good job of fining malware on the computer

I did just that, formatted, installed the os from the d drive, did that twice and the same thing happened. Had recover disc so I formatted the d drive so it would from the disc. After doing the install the main dll file to boot XP, reinstalled XP from recovery disc again, same thing happened, it failed to load the regsvr32 urlmon.dll. Have XP os disc without all the gateway bs on it,so once again I installed the os, and dang if the same dll didn't load.Sense I had ordered a new Dell XPS7100 with Windows7 Friday, said to hell with it, removed the hdd from the gateway and junked it.
Spent 4 hour between Wedsday and Thursday working with a Microsoft tec over the phone, gave them acess to the computer and they couldn't fix it. They did tell me that other ppl was having the same problem with other programs after formatting and reinstalling their OS.
One of the tecs even ran a scan on the system with an anti virus\spyware program, took it 2hrs and 5minutes, it went through every thing on the computer. Both partitions on the hdd, memory, registry, every file, pictures, document that was on it.Did some resreach afterwards and found out it has a FREE version out there.Go to SuperAntiSpyware.com for it. So I can say something out of this headache.
We can mark this as SOLVED!!I want to thank all of you at Daniweb for the asis.

Does anyone know why when I bootup the splash screen will shift to the left and out off 1/3 od the picture.this started with some games we were running so,and then it would shutdown, and correct itself. now it doesn't shut down so it hasn't corrected in a while. It wouldn't be ssch a problem except it affects the bios screen, which means I can't see the left side of the screen. This only happens in 800x600 resolution.

dewabo 16 Junior Poster

As y'all can see I've marked this as solved, turns out that I had several problems in this thing. It crashed one night and would not boot up the next morning, figured PSU, so went out and got mrself another one and installed it, still wouldn't boot, fan would spin and then it would shut down. Well the next thing that came to mine was mobo, got in tourch with intel and they replaced the mother board free of charge, well then I installed new mobo and old psu, nothing happened, noda,no fans ran or anything, replaced PSu with the new one and everything came to life, started getting a few error messages so I pulled the memory sticks and installed then one at a time, found out there was a bad stick, so now I'm running on just one gig of memory and will return the bad one to patriot for replacement, after all it has a lifetime warranty. But the 'puter is runnhing just fine now(knot on wood). Thanks for the assist guys.

dewabo 16 Junior Poster

I've ran the Microsoft mem test and had no failures after about 6 hrs one night. I've taken the memory sticks out and cleaned the contacts and swraped positions on the mobo without seeing any correction of problem, within two days she crashed again.
When this thing crashes the screen go black, I get three long beeps and then nothing, the machine stays on and after pushing the reset botton it comes back up and works fine for a few hours or even days. It has gone as long as three weeks without crashing, and other times for as little as one hour. everything I know points to the mobo and the Q965/Q963 express chipset.Going to call intel today and see what they say about it, hopifully they will replace this mobo.
will get back to you guys after talking to intel.

dewabo 16 Junior Poster

just done what you said, will see what happens. thanks for the responce, will post back later if this action fixes the problem. it may take a few days.

dewabo 16 Junior Poster

Ok here is a bit more on this problem. As you can see, I built this machine and it worked great for a while, then it crashed on me, error message said memory problem, down loaded Mircosoft's memory test and ran it, no failures with this test. System seemed to be working fine then out of the blue it crashed again, error message said something about a driver failing. Sense it seems to be video problem and I had intel's graphics media accelerator driver loaded, uninstalled it and everything worked fine for a bit. System then crashed with a memory error message, tested memory again, after no failures I swraped slots with the memory sticks, everything seemed to work. to make a long story short, have been flighting this problem now for about eight months. Reset always seemed to take care of the restarts until tonight. after this last crash reset did nothing, every time i tryed to restart with reset, would get three long beeps and the system would shut down. finally turned off the power for about five minutes and then turn it back on and started the computer normally. Everything seems to be working fine.
Could this be a MOBO problem or is it something else. I'm at a lost for what is causing this.
Many thanks to those who try to help me with this in advance.

Is this a recent built machine? If it is, disconnect the hdd, cd/dvd drives and start the machine. If problem is still there, pull the memory and try with just one stick of memory at a time and see if the machine will boot. If the board has an onboard video card and you are using a plug in card you may want to try the onboard card and try to boot using it.

dewabo 16 Junior Poster

How many programs do you have running at startup? Also how many anti-virus' do you have running? Your anti-virus' will slow down your startup because they do a scan on startup. You can go to run-msconfig and click on the startup tab and see what programs you have on startup. Here you need to be cariful because if you uncheck the wrong ons you will have trouble booting up.
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/ go here for more information on what to uncheck.

If this is a retale version of xp, when you load it in the new machine and try to register it you will get a message and phone number for microsoft, call that number and explain that the other machine has crash and this is a replacement computer, the person on the the phone will then give you a key number to activate your program. If the disc you have is a HP recovery set, sorry, they wan't load on a new machine. Been there, done that.

I take it that D: is your burner, right? Did you turn the computer off when you reconnected that loose wire? If you didn't then there is a very good chance that you shorted the drive and now will need to replace it.
Ok, let's say that the puter was turned off when you replaced that wire, now we need a bit more information from you. Is this an IDE or SATA burner? Here's how you can tell the two apart. An IDE will have a wide ribbon cable with a 40 pin plug on both ends, whereas a SATA will have a red cable to it. The SATA cable is real easy to knot loose because there is no locking system built into the plugs.
Now let's check and see if the puter sees the drive. If the puter sees it then you may want to reload your burn program and check it out. Let us know what happens.

dewabo 16 Junior Poster

Then the only thing I know to do is kba.

dewabo 16 Junior Poster

I've done a quick search for your mobo and came up with zip, nata. Does this board have an onboard sound card? Did you replace your speakers? If the answer to the first question is onboard, and the second is that you are using your old speakers then the problem may be in the speakers. Try another set of speakers and if they sound the same then it is more than likely the onboard sound card. In that case you may want to return the board for a new one .
As far as the slow loading goes, you may want to add some more ram, and check your startup programs. The more programs in startup the slower the load time. Also sense you didn't say how long the system was operating before you reloaded windows, if you went on line with it you just may have picked up a bug or two. Do a virus and spyware scan and get back to us.

dewabo 16 Junior Poster

Thanks jbennet, I just remember seeing it in bios but didn't go any farther in seeing what it did.
There is a way you can fix it so no one but you will know how to turn it on or off, but it is a little mod. Make a two switch system, where as you would have to push two bottems to turn off or on. the second bottem should be placed where only you know where it is.;)
