The ZDNet Great Debate Series explored the proposition: IT Department: Cost Center or Profit Center?. Discussing the IT industry and how it can adapt and prove to be a contributor to a company's profit as opposed to just the cost of doing business.

The debaters, Juston James of TechRepublic and Dana Gardner of ZDNet, gave some great insights in to the problems facing IT departments. James taking the cost side explained that while it could be possible, many in the IT industry are not adopting a profit prespective which could find them struggling in this era of outsourcing.

The problem, as James points out, is "most IT departments consistently fail to deliver value." The days of setting up servers, intranet and company records databases are gone and there is a need for IT employees to stay in front of new technology. If the department is to bring profit to the company it needs to be aware of what is hot and how the new tech can be incorporated in to the company's approach.

My suggestion has always been to have IT listen to what the marketing and sales teams are asking for and have them forward any new tech these people come across as they interact with others in their industry. Penguin is an algo aimed at over optimization - if you have a Webmaster Tools Account and received an unnatural links warning your site is part of it - if no WMT you still can be on their list but can't be certain - though if you have more anchor text with your keywords in them than links with your domain or brand name you can take it as you are there

You can get some slight branding through content and get conversions but usially very few and ultimately the conversion percentage I find to be higher.... the people are searching for something then find you vs someone on a site for whatever reason not necessarily looking to buy or convert to something else

make it while you can and work towards improving content... and adding content.... solid well written content that is the right niche or a topic you would like to talk about anyway is a goal

backlinks through getting referenced in other blogs is always good... write with solid headline and good content and people will find you... or post at Digg or Sphinn and have others reference you...

be careful using a backlink building software package - they automate emails and are seen as spam... if someone gets one and forwards to google you can get into problems

also the naming convention of the categories of the threads will help... just make sure they default as the title

work the words in but repeat them throughout the article as appropriate.. also using headings with some of them in it would also be a big help
