Looking at the partitions on the 2nd screen cap, I seriously doubt that this was a DVD/DVD drive issue. This looks more like something to do with the partitions going awry. The "System Reserved" and "Boot" paritions are created by the OS when installed and are usually hidden and should not be visible. I would instead try to clean the entire hard drive using the diskpart command. Heaven knows I've resolved a number of such issues using diskpart. If anyone wants to know the exact commands, let me know and I'd be happy to elaborate :)

You're saying you're trying to activate Office Home and Business. However, the screen shot you've posted shows Office Professional Plus installed. Remove Professional Plus and install Home and Business. The program should activate then.

As mentioned before, buy the biggest capacity drive you can afford at the moment. Prices are crashing on a daily basis and it definitely makes sense to invest in a large capacity drive. If I was in your place, I'd go for a minimum 250 GB HD, as it's fairly future proof, and with Vista around the corner. Vista, after a fresh install occupies ~8.5 GB disk space.

well, a lot of application manuals tell you something like "click with the mouse on the printer to print".
Someone's bound to take that literally :)

They said 'ON' the printer, right? Not 'IN' the printer. hehehehe:mrgreen:

Try running the Dell diagnostics. Press F12 when you see the Dell Logo and choose "Boot to Utility Partition" from the Boot time menu. Once it loads up, click on Express Test and then choose Video or Graphics. Let me know what the results say.

Just a quick note to let you guys know that I've been made Moderator of the Techtalk/Windows, Hardware and the Geek's Lounge section. This is a great opportunity and I'm glad that the work I've put in so far has been noticed by the other mods and Admins.

Once again, thanks DaniWeb team. Any suggestions/tips will be most welcome.

not too sure about lappies, but from what I've heard, if you can afford it, go for an Intel Centrino technology based system. Gives the best performance.

Damn. Nect time, I'll try flattery. And if that doesn't work, booze. And if that doesn't work, then a bribe...

You dont have to re activate everytime if you reinstall the OS on the same computer. Follow these stepa:

1. Double-click My Computer
2. Double-click on the "C" drive
3. Go to the C:\Windows\System32 folder
4. Find the files "wpa.dbl" and "wpa.bak" and copy them to a safe location.
5. After you have reinstalled Windows XP on your reformatted hard drive, click "No" when asked if you want to go ahead and go through the activation process
6. Reboot your computer into SafeMode
7. Double-click My Computer
8. Double-click on the "C" drive
9. Go to the C:\Windows\System32 folder
10. Find the file "wpa.dbl" and "wpa.bak" (if it exists) and rename them to "wpadbl.new" and "wpabak.new"
11. Copy your original "wpa.dbl" and "wpa.bak" files from your floppy disk, CD or DVD into the C:\Windows\System32 folder
12. Restart your system

58760 voters? Already? Shocking, considering I set up the poll about 3hours ago. Also, did I really add the last option? Think think...no I didn't. gaaaah...Now that's just plain abuse of moderator power :D.

Did you take a look at the Event Log? That is a good place to see what is causing the error...

Need for Speed: Most Wanted has the free roam option where you can just take in the sights. However, if you bang too many cars or buildings, the police come looking for you. But that doesn't happen often.

The amount of RAM you have is barely sufficient to run XP. For decent performance, you need a minimum of 256 MB. Also, your processor is just about OK. I'd suggest you go for a new machine altogether.

also its brand new but its making a scratchy sound when i try to install windows, is this normal?

Scratchy sound ONLY while windows install means the hdd is probably OK. Sound all the time means the HDD may conk off. Get it replaced ASAP.

I also suggest running a diagnostic tool like Seagate's Seatools
