If you can post the exact error message, we'd be able to assist better.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Why not just right click on the drive and choose "Change drive letter and Path" and then click "Add" to associate a drive letter to it?

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Have you tried enabling file and printer sharing? Start > Control Panel > Network Connections. Right click Local Area Connection > Properties. Make sure File and Printer Sharing is checked. If the entry does not exist, add it by clicking Install below.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

I don't think there's a way to differentiate the version of Windows based on the Product Key. However, could you elaborate what you mean when you say

We cannot access the HDD

?

If the OS is installed, you could just get to the Windows Advanced Options menu by tapping on F8 when the system boots. That would list the flavor of Windows installed.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Ahhhh, we have to build our post count, don't we :)

And that's what I'm doing right now too :D

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

All this discussion after a simple "No". I like, I like :P

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Also check that your system BIOS is not set to automatically start the system

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

I agree with stvrich. I had a similar problem on my home computer where most websites would open but apps like Avast would not update, Windows Update failed and Y! Messenger could not connect. It turned out to be an issue with my ISP and they rectified the fault. You might want to get your internet service and your servers checked out.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

I must say that you have followed a very logical course of action. I would however like to mention that considering that the exact same issue occured on two different drives, I would definitely not root this as a software problem. Or even a problem with the hard drive/controller. A few of your points in your previous post caught my attention

Letting the machine continuously power off and on up to 50 times until it finally reboots

and

Wrapping it in blankets and letting it continually restart until it boots

would seem to imply that the system fan is probably not spinning properly. My thinking is that when you do either of these steps, the unit heats up and causes the fan sensor to try and spin the fan at max speed and the fan starts spinning. When this happens, the unit cools down enough to POST (I'm going to say POST as I classify this issue as No POST rather than no Boot) and work as normal. When you put the system to sleep/hibernate, the temperature is lowered and the fan would cut out and not start up again until it receives full power. This would seem to imply an issue with the fan itself - it does not spin at all when it should be spinning at low speeds, only spins at high speeds

Putting it in the refrigerator and then restarting it after it is really cooled down

Blowing into the fan opening while restarting

XP IS being removed. XP support is NOT being offered through Microsoft anymore.

This website here shows that support for Windows XP Pro will end on 14th April 2009.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Slowly being phased out, maybe. But you would also know that XP SP3 is due in the second quarter of '08. XP support will be around for some time now. Besides, Dell for one IS offering computers with XP. Verify your facts before making any such claims.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

I concur with Chris. If indeed you have the same problem in Safe Mode, you're left with little choice except for a reinstall. However, one thing I can suggest is to check to see if there were any Windows Updates installed around the time the problem started. If yes, try removing then from Programs andFeatures (from Task Manager, launch "control appwiz.cpl" to get to Vista's Programs and Features module)

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Also try running diagnostics on the memory.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

because they are actually trying to be customer friendly there, unlike most companies who would at best give you the phone number for sales

trust me, I know exactly how it works. and you have to understand that the techs are being helpful even on issues that do not concern them not because you are entitled to that, but because it is company policy towards customers - to help as much as they can

Agreed. But it really doesn't matter if the dude there is doing so because he is helpful or because it's policy, as long as he can get you what you want

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Trust me, in Dell, they can. I should know, I've done it numerous times.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Just spoke to a Dell rep and I was informed that XP is available (after a lot of time convincing him I do NOT want Vista on my laptop - got my desktop with Vista). This ofcourse, is Dell India. I checked the US site and they do have XP available. Try calling up Dell Tech Support and ask the tech agent to tell the sales guy that you WANT XP.

How'd you fix it? System Restore?

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

the line G:\=Windows 98 -- in this, is G: drive the one with Win98? That is to say, whats the drive letter assigned by XP to the drive with Win98? If it's D:, then set it to D:\=Windows 98. Be advised that this partition should be active and should have the Win98 startup files.

Right click on the desktop and then click Properties. In the Display properties window, click the "Desktop" tab and then click the "Customize Desktop" button. In the new window that pops up, select "Internet Explorer" and OK your way out of Display Properties.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Have you tried checking the drive on a nother computer? It's possible that some parts of the DVD (specifically the part retaining to copy protection) may have gone bad. If this is the case, the only recourse would be to get the drive serviced or getting a new drive

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Try uninstalling and reinstalling MP10. I'm guessing that this is an issue with the WMP being corrupt.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

No, you cannot use both DDR and DDr2 simultaneously on boards which have both the slots. You can use either DDR or DDR2 at one time. I guess this should answer your second question.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

wait a sec...is that iexplorer or iexplore? iexplorer is some kinda spyware. Internet explorer would be iexplore (without the 'R' in the end)

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Does anyone here know if a Flaming Mo exists? Love to try that out hehehehehe

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

The fault does not lie in the PC. It's a problem with your wall power outlet. You need to get an electrician to fix the problem.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

No it isn't. Make sure the wall outlet you have plugged the system into is properly earthed....

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

You could disable System restore and re enable it. That way, all old restore points will be dleeted, and windows will create a new one for you. This should clear a significant amount of space..

FYI, system restore files are found in the \System Volume Information folder.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

what was the problem?

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

yup. as long as your mobo has the SATA and IDE ports...

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Try reinstalling your Display drivers and the codec.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Sorry Dave. You know how conversations tend to trail off the topic.

But to answer your question, I prefer coffee, black

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

You can also set the NTFS permissions such that one OS cant access the drive of the second one.

I thought NTFS permissions are stored on the disk itself. If you set deny permissions in one OS, the same permissions will apply to the other OS too. For example, if you have XP on C: and D:, and if you set deny permissions to D: from the OS installed in C:, you will not be able to even boot the OS installed in D:. The same applies the other way too. I don't think NTFS permissions are the way to go in this case. Best bet is to remove the drive letter from disk management.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

FAT32 is your hard disk's file system. A file sustem is what determines how the OS stores data. Regarding your question about checking for inconsistencies, you don't have to worry about that. This happens when invariably a logical error occurs on the disk. Windows then runs the chkdsk (Check Disk) utility to resolve these errors. 99% of the time, Windows does resolve these errors and you don't have to do a blamed thing. However, sometimes, due to a failing disk, bad sectors develop. These are physical errors and cannot be fixed. Windows instead marks these sectors as bad and does not use them for storing data. If this does happen, Windows will notify you. So relax, and if you see the chkdsk screen again, let it complete. It will not harm your system in any way.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

>>Err.. you are getting it all wrong.
Dude, I was just kidding.

About the spell trouble bit, well yeah you're right. But then again, that's what the Geek's Lounge is for.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Thats what i intended to say, i definately agree but with other reputable people around....

What're you trying to say? That you don't agree with me? I think I've just been insulted...

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Err.. of course he wouldn't but looking at the way this thread is shaping up from "Your favourite beverage" to "Wolfpack making friends with Indians" Dani or some SuperMod would definately ban us all including wolfie :)

Such deviations from topic tend to lend some character, wouldn't you agree?

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Oh...guess I'll have to sweet talk her out of it if she ever decides to ban me.

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

You wouldn't do that, would ya pal? Buddy. Chum. Overall nice guy....

goldeagle2005 33 Finkus Stinkalotus Team Colleague

Actually I have met her after she was crowned Miss World back in '94. She was doing some promotion and was in our locality. If only I'd known about your demand that time, I would've kept her with me. Ah well. Time to go to other sources. DANIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII.........................
