XAMPP is a package that bundles apache,mysql,php,perl in one easy to use tarball. other wise you can go to mysql.com and download the binaries or source code and install it.
Depending on your distro, you should have mysql in a package management system, ports,portage,apt_get,pkg_add, etc...
