PHP to PYTHON Conversion

As i dont know php i am unable to understand how this code is working?
Can any body please help me to convert the following php code into python code.

function icmpChecksum($data)
{
if (strlen($data)%2)
$data .= "\x00";
$bit = unpack('n*', $data);
$sum = array_sum($bit);
while ($sum >> 16)
$sum = ($sum >> 16) + ($sum & 0xffff);
return pack('n*', ~$sum);
}

This php code actually calculate check sum of Some data.
