Quite a lousy assignment.
what types of media is it supposed to support? why must it be in Netbeans? what about it is giving you "a hard time", and, also quite important: what have you tried so far?

JavaFX (part of Java 8) has extensive media playing capabilities. Just Google it for tutorials etc.
