Is there a way to display text from selecting checkboxes such that different combinations have different texts?

Ok. I have a sets of checkboxes a = {1, 2, 3, 4}. Selecting different combinations of checkboxes have different results, so e.g. 1,2 = something; 1, 3 = something different etc. Im wondering if its possible to display the result of each different combination using javascript.
