My daughters laptop eventually failed to boot, only the fan comes on and no POST. I suspect the CMOS battery has failed, but am not sure and would like to know if this could be the cause before I buy a replacement battery.

POST should report a CMOS failure. If it doesn't it's not the CMOS. No POST usually means screwed motherboard.
