Hi guys,

Somehow my PC seems to be infected with this W32.Mumawow.F!inf. My Norton IS stopped and removed it but it always creeps back.
Have you guys heard about this?

The "mumawow,Flinf?" is a known virus that may have come through your system attached to another virus. The virus may keep reappearing for many reasons. If your Norton product does not contain the latest updates, which are downloaded and installed using LiveUpdate, and you have not completed a recent "Full System Scan," those can be the reasons why your computer is still infected.

In order to provide you with the proper instructions to resolve this issue, please let me know the following information:

1. What Norton product and what Version is installed on your computer?

2. What version of Windows are you using?


Please respond back to this post and let me know the answers, so that i can provide you with the correct steps to resolve this issue.

After I deleted C:\WINDOWS\Fonts\syn00-19-D1-87-11-67\system\smss.exe. I thought I caught the virus but no and I was far away from being clear.

I tried running Norton IS 2008 Scan and Full Scan but the program wouldn't run. I couldn't even update the program itself. I think the virus somehow disable the Norton Internet Security.

I did some research on this W32.Mumawow.F!inf and I found out there were NTLDR.EXE and AUTORUN.INF under my two hard driveswhich are virus related programs. (the original NTLDR does not have .exe at the end) I deleted them and Norton was still not running.

I downloaded BitDefender and Kaspersky free anti virus scan and I did a thorogh scan of my pc which took hours. I did find a couple more spywares and virus. However, the Norton was still down. Anyway, the heck with it, I clean-reinstall my Windows XP and now everything is working fine and reinstalled Norton and it's working fine as well.

Thank you for responding, and no need to apologize for the length of your post. Hopefully the length of my response will not bore you.

You did the right thing by starting from scratch. As you may have discovered in your own research , this particular security problem can unfortunately replicate throughout your system.

In this case, since it appears that it had infected the NTLDR file, which is the main boot loader file for windows, the quickest solution is to backup your important files and reinstall Windows and Norton. The only other way to resolve this issue entails turning off System Restore and possibly deleting registry keys (which, if done improperly can severely damage your system).

The best way to keep yourself protected against vulnerabilities such as this one, is to make sure that you have your LiveUpdate schedule set to check for updates continually. Also, make sure that you have a Full System Scan set at least once a month (usually when you are not in front of your computer due to the amount of time it could take to complete.)

I am glad that you were able to resolve the issue and I hope that my explanation makes sense.
