Short summary and practical next steps (for ): the message "…is not a valid Win32 application" most often means the EXE is corrupt/truncated, the wrong architecture, not actually a Windows executable, or has been tampered with by malware — not a normal installer failure. Re-downloading from the vendor (and checking size/checksum) is the basic check, but when installers and Safe Mode are both blocked it points toward an infection that’s actively protecting itself. (learn.microsoft.com)
Why Safe Mode matters and what to try first: malware and modern rootkits can alter boot/registry settings (the SafeBoot keys or BCD) so Safe Mode won’t help, or they force safe-mode boots that bypass defenses. That makes an offline/bootable-rescue scan the best first move — a rescue ISO boots outside Windows, updates virus signatures, and can remove items that run inside the OS. (attack.mitre.org)
Before repair or reinstall: copy your personal files off the disk using a Live USB (Ubuntu or similar) so you don’t lose documents, photos, browser profiles, mail stores, etc. A live environment can mount NTFS and let you copy data to an external disk before you try any destructive steps. (help.ubuntu.com)
Conservative recovery workflow (ordered, concise)
- On a clean PC download a trusted rescue ISO (Kaspersky Rescue Disk or another vendor), write it to USB, boot the infected machine, update signatures and run a full scan/remove. ()
- If you can’t run the rescue or it doesn’t fix everything, boot an Ubuntu Live USB and copy important files to external media (do not copy executables). (help.ubuntu.com)
- Re-check installers from a clean PC (official site, compare file size/hashes) before running them on the repaired machine. (kb.corel.com)
- If cleaning fails or the OS remains unstable, perform the Windows repair (in‑place) using your XP/Windows install media or do a full reinstall after backing up — Microsoft documents the repair-install procedure for XP-era systems. ()
Cautions: always work from a known-clean machine to download tools, verify digital sources, and don’t run unknown EXEs from the infected PC. If this feels risky, a clean reinstall after backing up is the safest, fastest way to be sure the system is clean.

Download HijackThis from here. Download it to your desktop and NOT a temporary folder.
Start HJT & press the "Do a system scan and save a log file" button. When the scan is finished a window will pop up giving you the option of where to save it. Save it to desktop where it is easy to access. Open the log file and copy the entire contents of the file & paste it into the body of your post. DO NOT FIX ANYTHING YET. Most of what is there is necessary for the running of your system.

unfortunately i can't remember when the virus hit but i can remember that it all began when my Kaspersky's license expired and it wouldn't accept the new key that's when my antivirus stoped working and the virus did the error to prevent me from installing any other application Oh!! and the PC won't go on the safe mode i tried so many times but it just keeps repeating my "booting page" (is that what u call it right?) so i can choose which windows 98 or XP to start. is there's a solution or i'll have to format my PC coz everyone keeps telling me to format it but i can still see hope :) thx a lot for your efforts Crunchie

It should just be the Run window, not a command prompt window. You may have to do a system repair if you have your XP install CD?

To fransbautista and to finc, this thread is over 3 years old, the original poster never returned. franbaustista, your problem is similar to the original poster's problem it may not be caused by the same thing, especially three years later. Please begin your OWN threads when posting problems rather than posting within another's thread which is called thread hijacking.
