This PUP has remnants that McAfee states it can not remove. McAfee also states that Demo-LeakTest is not a threat, but it's disconcerting to be told after each virus scan that there is a problem that can't be fully resolved. I tried to delete the file McAfee names as A0018721.exe, which is buried deep beneath C:\"System Volume Information". I can not get near this file with DIR or ATTRIB from the cmd line, let alone DELETE it! This program was installed by a package designed to test my system for security, so somehow, it was installed. Does anyone know how to remove it? :'(

Go to Start | Run and type msconfig and press enter.

When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
On the next page, click the System Restore Settings link on the left.

Check the box labelled 'Turn off System restore'.

Reboot. Go back in and Turn System Restore Back on. A new Restore Point will be created.

Note that all previous restore points will be lost.

I followed your directions and when I eventually ran a McAfee scan, the Demo-LeakTest complaint had disappeared. However, during the process, I received an error popup while making the change with msconfig. The popup label was "System Configuration", and the message was, "An Access Denied error was returned while attempting to change a service. You may need to log on using an Administrator account to make the specified changes."

I *WAS* using an Administrator account. Since the problem seems to have gone away, do I need to worry about this notice? Being a retired programmer, even if your answer is "No", I'd kind of like to know why I got the message. ;)

Try booting in safe mode as Administrator and doing it. It would seem you were able to complete the task anyway, but I know not why you got the error message.

Can have a quick look with hijackthis too, if you wish.

Download HijackThis from here. Download it to your desktop and NOT a temporary folder.
Start HJT & press the "Do a system scan and save a log file" button. When the scan is finished a window will pop up giving you the option of where to save it. Save it to desktop where it is easy to access. Open the log file and copy the entire contents of the file & paste it into the body of your post. DO NOT FIX ANYTHING YET. Most of what is there is necessary for the running of your system.

I was going to remove some of the R0/R1 entries to shorten the list, but you did say to include the entire log, so here it is.

Well what do I do, these bugs(beetles) after a certain amount of time start eating my desktop, there is obviously something wrong, so how do i go about finding it out and getting rid of it, my antivirus scan progams tell me that there is spyware detected...I need to solve this issue, I do most of my bills online, I need to make sure that I am safe and secure from spyware/identity theft...ect.

Thanks for the quick examination of my HiJackThis scan results. I removed the items you pointed to and redid turning off System Restore as Administrator from Safe Mode. XP wouldn't allow me to turn Restore back on from Safe mode, but I was able to do it from normal mode with Admin privileges. However, during both processes, I got the same Access Error message mentioned above. This complaint notwithstanding, the Restore OFF/ON processes seem to be completing correctly. I subsequently ran another McAfee scan with no problems reported. I'm getting ready to attribute this to something Microsoft may have overlooked!

Thanks for all your help. I've learned a lot, and hopefully others have too. I'm installing XP-SP3 on the subject machine as I write this - maybe this will miraculously fix the problem! I'll leave this thread open for now and follow up with any useful information I discover.
