My computer has Windows XP Professional (Windows versions 5.1 with SP3), and Symantec Endpoint Protection, version 11.0.200.1567. The computer had some issues in the middle of December that I thought I fixed, but once again I am having problems with trojans and rootkits. The problem in December was first apparent when a fake antivirus pop-up window showed up. I followed the steps in this thread:
http://www.daniweb.com/forums/thread134865.html
In addition to the recommended steps, I ran Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware, and followed the recommended fixes, since both of them found things that other programs did not. I did not post anything to the forums at that point because the problem seemed to have been solved.
Symantec is very slow to start up, however, and the icon in the tray on the bottom right says that it's disabled. When I open Symantec, it says that everything is on/enabled. However, when I recently looked at the scan settings, I realized that it is not running the scan at start up, and hasn't done so since January 4.
Also this week, when I updated Spybot and ran it, it found these problems:
PWS.Small.bs
Nurech
Microsoft.WindowsSecurityCenter_disabled
I had Spybot fix the problems, and then tried to reboot into safe mode to run Spybot again (as it recommended), but found that the computer won't boot into safe mode (When fixing issues in December, I was able to run safe mode at that time). I then tried booting in safe mode by checking the /SAFEBOOT box in the System Configurations, and this just meant that the computer couldn't boot at all and was stuck in the same cycle over and over again. I managed to get out of this, used System Restore to go back to a restore point about a week ago, and unchecked the /SAFEBOOT box in System Configurations--lesson learned. Nevertheless, I still can't boot into safe mode. I found what looks to be useful information about repairing this problem here:
http://pcsupport.about.com/od/fixtheproblem/ht/repairbootini.htm
However, our Windows XP CD isn't where I thought it was, so I am not sure how to proceed without it, or if I absolutely must have the CD to fix the safe boot issue.
Since this, I've been following the steps again from the previously-mentioned Daniweb thread, and also have run Spybot and Ad-Aware. Malwarebytes found something, but MS Windows Malicious Software Removal and Ad-Aware did not find anything. A Full Scan on Symantec also did not find any problems. A second go-round of Spybot showed that the aforementioned issues are still present. I'm including the logs from Malware-bytes, ESET Online Scanner, and the two DDS logs. I did not have ESET repair anything at this point, based on the advice from the Daniweb forum thread.
I don't know if this issue is related to the issue I had in December, but in any case I can't follow all the recommended fixes without the ability to boot into Safe Mode. I also don't know what's causing Symantec to have problems at start-up. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Mary
