Thanks again - hope this works.

No signs of Aurora, but there are some other leftovers to deal with:

1. Uninstall WeatherBug via your Add/Remove Programs control Panel. "The Bug" contains adware/spyware components.

2. Uninstall AdwareAlert; it has a questionable reputation at best. You can read more about AdwareAlert and other disreputable and outright bogus "anti-spyware" tools here.

3. Run HijackThis again and have it fix:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [kzwgjg] c:\windows\system32\wtikjwi.exe r
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Weather] C:\PROGRA~1\AWS\WEATHE~1\Weather.exe 1
O9 - Extra button: WeatherBug - {AF6CABAB-61F9-4f12-A198-B7D41EF1CB52} - C:\PROGRA~1\AWS\WEATHE~1\Weather.exe (HKCU)

4. Delete the following file:
c:\windows\system32\wtikjwi.exe

5. Empty your Recycle Bin, reboot, run HJT again, and post a new (and hopefully final) log.

Hi,
Thanks DMR :)
Also, i would recommend an online virus scan at Panda Activescan, with the "Disinfection" option enabled. After the scan, please save the log file, and post it's contents along with new HijackThis log.

Thanks again! How many of these antivirus sites are there? How do you know which are reliable?

1.

Thanks again! How many of these antivirus sites are there? How do you know which are reliable?

You ask people like us. :D

Here's a list of some of the most-often recommended online scanners:

http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus.html
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
http://us.mcafee.com/root/mfs/default.asp?cid=9914

2. I missed one leftover (from the Aurora infection) in your HJT log. Please do the following:

- Open HijackThis again and click on the "Config" button in the lower right corner of HijackThis' main window.

- In the next window click on the "Misc Tools" button at the top then click the "Delete an NT service" button. Type the following in the box and click OK:

svcproc

- Reboot, run HJT again, and verify that the O23 - Service: System Startup Service (SvcProc) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe (file missing) is no longer present. If it is still present, or if you got any errors during the deletion process, let us know.

3. Remove the Viewpoint Manager program using your Add/Remove Programs control panel. Also uninstall any MyWay/MySearch/MyBar-related programs as well if you find them listed there.

4. Reboot into Safe Mode and:

- Open Windows Explorer, and in the Folder Options->View settings under the Tools menu, select "show hidden files and folders", and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and "Hide extentions for known file types".

- Delete the following files:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\FLEOK
C:\WINDOWS\downloaded program files\ATPartners.inf
C:\Documents and Settings\user\Application Data\tvmcwrd.dll
C:\Documents and Settings\user\Application Data\tvmknwrd.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\SplWbr.dll

- Delete the following folders entirely if they still exist:
C:\Program Files\MySearch
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Viewpoint
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint

- Empty your Recycle Bin.

- reboot normally, run HJT again, and post the new log.

I got the following error while trying to delete the "svcproc":

The service 'svcproc' is enabled and/or running. Disable it first, using HijackThis itself (from the scan results) or the services.msc window.

I tried to remove it directly from the scan results but that did nothing - when I ran the scan again it showed up again.

What do you think?

Sorry- my bad. The service needs to be disabled before it can be deleted:

1. Open the Services utility in your Administrative Tools control panel.

2. In the list of services, locate the service named "System Startup Service" or "SvcProc" and double-click on it.

3. In the General tab of the Properties window that opens, click the Stop button.

4. Once the service is stopped, choose Disabled in the "Startup Type" drop-down menu and then click OK. Close the Services utility after that.

5. Run HijackThis and try deleting the service again:

- Put a check next to the O23 - Service: System Startup Service (SvcProc) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe (file missing) entry and then click "Fix Checked".

- Once HJT finishes the fix, click on the "Config" button in the lower right corner of HijackThis' main window.

- In the next window click on the "Misc Tools" button at the top then click the "Delete an NT service" button. Type the following in the box and click OK:

svcproc

6. Reboot, run HJT again, and see if the SvcProc entry still appears.

I think it worked this time. Though my computer seems to be running a bit slower than it has in the past. I really appreciate all your help!

Also, there is a program in my control panel named "The ABI Network- A Division of Direct Revenue". Should this be removed as well?

Absolutely- kill it.

2. Your HJT log is clean. :)

3. Is the slowdown you think you might be seeing an overall "sluggishness", or is it just that Windows seems to take a longer time to start up?

I tried deleting the program (The ABI Network- A Division of Direct Revenue) but in order to delete I have to go to their website (www.mypctuneup.com) and download an uninstaller. Should I do this or could it screw more things up?

Some people have removed the program that way, but I myself have trouble recommending that someone trust a removal tool offered by the same company that gave you the infection in the first place.

You can do one of two things:

A) Use their removal tool and see what happens. Paranoid bugger that I am, I would do full system scans with ewido, Norton, and probably a few other utilities right after I used the online removal tool.

B) Since we're seeing no other signs of Aurora other that the Add/Remove Programs entry, remove the entry from the A/R P control panel manually:

Thanks again DMR....i was busy here, thanks for replying here. :D

No problem swatkat.

We've only got a few really active responders here, so we try to pick up/follow up for each other so that members aren't left hanging.

Given that, feel free to jump in yourself if you see a thread-in-progress that needs a helping hand. :)

Thanks again guys. I finally deleted that file (I did it manually).
Seems to be worker much better now.

Glad we could help you get it sorted out, sldout1. :)

If your system really does appear to be "clean" now, can you please give us final confirmation on that so that we can call this one done and mark the thread as "Solved".

Thanks.

Seems to be good. You could mark this "solved". Thanks again!

Will do. Thanks :)

Hi, I too had the Aurora Virus and I found this forum via search. I had the virus even after a clean reformat, it managed to stay "nailed" (heh) in my Windows folder even after a reformat. I just want to say that your instructions worked perfectly and I no longer am experiencing the problems I did before and the nail.exe folder as well as the the Aurora files themselves are clean from my computer.

Prior to finding this forum, I was very angry to find that when you try and do a standard removal with "Add/Remove Programs" with the Aurora program that rather than removing the program it makes a popup link that you go to their website to get their "Uninstaller program" (more virus) that their User Agreement states that by dowloading their bogus uninstaller you are signing your rights for them to use your machine for their adware and spyware which they install. It reeks a lot of blackmail to me. I'm glad I did read their user agreement, and I feel for the people who carelessly and innocently use the uninstaller only to make matters worse.

Anyway, I signed up to these forums to send kudos to you and to say that there are many of us out there that you never hear of using these instructions to succesfully remove it.

And to those who are looking at these instructions, they areally aren't as difficult as they appear initially if you do them step-by-step. I downloaded all the programs mentioned and put everything into a file folder on my desktop ans well as a text version of the instructions and took my computer offline while I went through the steps, and it worked like a charm.

Thanks very much. :)

Glad that, we at Daniweb could help you :D

As am I. :)

And to those who are looking at these instructions, they areally aren't as difficult as they appear initially if you do them step-by-step.

A good point, sldout1; thanks for mentioning that.

While many infections can be automatically removed by using anti-virus and anti-spyware programs, some infections (such as Aurora/Nail) are nasty enough that they cannot be removed by such programs.; hence the need for "manual" removal procedures.

As you said, the instructions for those procedures can definitely look difficult (if not absolutely incomprehensible) at first glance, but if followed step-by-step, they will work. We don't ask that anyone try to understand the steps involved, and nor do they need to.

However- people should be know that these kinds of removal instructions are tried and tested, and are the result of a lot of hard work and research done by a worldwide community of experts who dedicate much of their time to finding cures to the more persistent infections that the mainstream utilities can't cope with. In other words- the procedures are trustworthy, and if followed exactly, they will do the job.
