Hello,
Please excuse any mistakes I make, this is my first time posting here. If I forget to list any necessary information, just let me know and I'll get it up ASAP. Thanks!
As you can tell by the title, my comp has been infected with at least Nail.exe and transponder.abetterinternet.aurora. I believe there's a couple other spywares on here, but I'm not sure. I've tried some of the remedies in the other posts, but to no avail. I've attempted to remove Nail.exe several times, but it keeps popping back up.

Here's what my computer looks like right now:
Pent 4 1.8 Gig, 640 RAM, XP Home 2002 SP2, Norton Anti Virus 2004, Windows Firewall, Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta 1, Spyware Doctor Version 3.1.0.312, SpyBot Search and Destroy, Ewido Security Suite Trial Version, Hijackthis.
I keep getting pop-ups that say Aurora and MS AntiSpyware is constantly trying to remove stuff and reboot the computer.
Again, thank you. I appreciate any help you can give me.
-Eric

Follow the suggestions in these threads:

Then, right-click in an open area of your desktop, select New, Folder; give the new folder a name (something like HJT or HijackThis), and drag the hijackthis.exe icon that is on your desktop into the new folder.

Close any open browser windows, scan with HJT, and post a new log please.

Thanks for the reply. OK, I cleaned out all of the temp, history, and cookie folders just like it says in that thread. I did it again in safe mode to get the stubborn files. I reset the IE settings and scanned with Trend Micro.

Your log still shows indications of a full-blown Aurora infection. Please follow the instructions below carefully and fully:

You will need to disconnect from the Internet for most of the cleaning procedures, so you should print out the following instructions or save them into a text file using Notepad.

* Download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

* Download Nailfix from here:
http://www.noidea.us/easyfile/file....050515010747824
Unzip it to the desktop but please do NOT run it yet.

* Open the Services utility in your Administrative Tools control panel.

- In the list of services, locate the service named "System Startup Service" or "SvcProc" and double-click on it.

- In the General tab of the Properties window that opens, click the Stop button.

- Once the service is stopped, choose Disabled in the "Startup Type" drop-down menu and then click OK. Close the Services utility after that.

* Next, reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:
http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml

* Once in Safe Mode, double-click on Nailfix.cmd. Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly (this is normal).

* Then run Ewido, and run a full scan. Save the logfile from the scan.

* Next run HijackThis, click Scan, and put a check in the box to the left of:

Close all open windows except for HijackThis and click Fix Checked.

* Once HJT finishes the fix, click on the "Config" button in the lower right corner of HijackThis' main window.

- In the next window click on the "Misc Tools" button at the top then click the "Delete an NT service" button. Type the following in the box and click OK:

svcproc

- Close HijackThis

* Open Windows Explorer, and in the Folder Options->View settings under the Tools menu, select "show hidden files and folders", and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and "Hide extentions for known file types".

- Locate and delete the following files (note that ewido may have deleted some of these already):

C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\exp.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wintask.exe
c:\windows\system32\rrnpww.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\lqfax12n.dll
C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe

- Delete the following folder entirely:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\vidctrl

- For every user account listed under C:\Documents and Settings, delete the entire contents of these folders (but not the folders themselves):

Important: One of the normal steps in eliminating malicious programs is to entirely delete the contents of all Temp folders. Given that, if any data that you care about is living in those Temp folders, you need to move it to a safe location now, or it will be erased along with everything else!

1. Cookies
2. Local Settings\Temp
3. Local Settings\History
4. Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files

- Delete the entire content of your C:\Windows\Temp folder.

- Delete the entire content of your C:\Windows\Prefetch folder.

Note- If you get any messages concerning the deletion of system files such as desktop.ini or index.dat, just choose to delete those files; they'll be automatically regenerated by Windows if needed. Windows will allow you to delete the versions of those files which exist in sub-folders within the main Temp/Temorary folders, but might not let you delete the versions of those files that exist in the main Temp folders themselves; this is normal and OK.

- Empty your Recycle Bin.

* Restart your computer in normal mode and post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.

I did everything listed to a tee. One problem: I could not delete C:\WINDOWS\system32\lqfax12n.dll. Message said it was in use by another program. I am still getting pop-ups and MS AntiSpyware threat alerts. (just got one right now saying "Transponder.ABetterInternet.Adware is trying to install")

Please follow the instructions in this thread:
http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/thread13362.html

Get the Pocket Killbox from here:
http://bleepingcomputer.com/files/spyware/KillBox.zip

Unzip the file to your desktop.

Boot into Safe Mode and do a search for lqfax12n.dll, and delete any instances found.

If any could not be deleted, run Pocket Killbox and paste the full file path in the box and click on Delete on Reboot. Click on the button with the red circle and an X in the middle; you will get a message saying File will be deleted on next reboot, Process and Reboot now?, Click Yes to reboot. (Note: the 'file path' will be something like C:\WINDOWS\system32\lqfax12n.dll)

Empty your Recycle Bin, reboot normally, and search for the file again to make sure it's gone.

Then, right-click in an open area of your desktop, select New, Folder; give the new folder a name (something like HJT or HijackThis), and drag the hijackthis.exe icon that is on your desktop into the new folder.

Close any open browser windows, scan with HJT, and post a new log please.

lqfax12n.dll seems to be gone, but I'm still getting pop-ups.

You still have Aurora :(

For every User listed under C:\Documents and Settings, delete the entire contents of these folders (not the folders themselves):
Local Settings\Temp
Cookies
History
Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5

Then go to post #5 in this thread and follow the instructions carefully:
http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/thread28196.html

When you've completed that, go to post #6 in the same thread and follow the instructions there as well.

In addition to the entries suggested to be fixed with Hijackthis in thoses posts, include these:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [rebdzp] c:\windows\system32\ayxakb.exe r
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Issfjgus] C:\WINDOWS\system32\W?nSxS\arpa.exe

Sorry it has taken me so long to respond...I greatly appreciate your help, though.
Well, I did everything in all of those posts to a tee. I'm still getting pop-ups.

I don't know if this has anything to do with the adware, but my computer sounds like it's constantly working. The hard drive seems to be constantly doing something... :( ...it hasn't stopped since it got infected....

Something isn't right here. There have been indications of at least 4 or 5 separate infections in your logs, but nothing you've done so far has had much of an impact on them. :(

You will need to disconnect from the Internet for some of the following, so you'll need to print out the following instructions, or save them into a text file with Notepad:

1. Go into your Add/Remove Programs control panel and uninstall NaviSearch and Surf Sidelick if you see them listed.

2. Run at least three of the following online anti-virus/anti-spyware scannerss and let them fix what they can (for some of these scans you need to specifically select the option to have them clean/delete the infections they find, otherwise they'll just do a scan):

http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus.html
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
http://us.mcafee.com/root/mfs/default.asp?cid=9914
http://www.pandasoftware.com/active...n_principal.htm
http://www.ravantivirus.com/scan/
http://www.bitdefender.com/scan/licence.php

3. If you don't already have the most current versions of Ad Aware and Spybot, please download them from the links in my sig below and install them. Also download and install CCleaner, but don't run it yet.

4. Open Ad Aware, Spybot, Microsoft Antispyware, and ewido one at time and use each program's online update feature to make sure you have the absolutely most current spyware definition databases installed for each. DO NOT run scans with any of the programs yet; just close the programs once they've finished updating.

5. Click on the "Run..." option under your Start menu, type "cmd" (omit the quotes) into the resulting "Open:" box, and hit enter.

* In the DOS box that opens, type the following two commands one at a time at the prompt, and hit Enter after each:

regsvr32 /u C:\WINDOWS\system32\MSICDA.DLL
regsvr32 /u C:\WINDOWS\system32\AUNPS2.DLL

* Close the DOS window once both commands complete. Let us know whether or not both commands completed sucessfully.

6. Run HijackThis again and have it fix:

O20 - Winlogon Notify: MS-DOSOptions - C:\WINDOWS\system32\MSICDA.DL

7. Reboot into Safe Mode again and:

* Open Windows Explorer, and in the Folder Options->View settings under the Tools menu, select "show hidden files and folders", and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and "Hide extentions for known file types".

- Locate and delete the following files:

C:\WINDOWS\wupdt.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\MSICDA.DLL
C:\WINDOWS\system32\AUNPS2.DLL
C:\WINDOWS\dinst.exe
c:\windows\system32\zunneg.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\conset.exe

- Delete the following folders entirely:

C:\Program Files\NaviSearch
C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3

- Empty your Recycle Bin.

8. Run Ad Aware, SpyBot, MS Antispyware, and ewido consecutively (the actual order doesn't matter). Have each program fix everything it finds.

9. Run Nailfix.cmd again.

10. Run CCleaner. When it finishes scanning, right-click on any of the entries in the right-hand list of found "Issues", choose "Select all" from the resulting pop-up menu, and then click the "Fix selected issues" button.

11. Reboot, run HJT again, and post a fresh log.

Well, I've given up on this. I couldn't keep wasting time scanning and such and not accomplishing anything. I reformatted my computer and reinstalled XP and all of my programs. The computer is running better than ever. Everything's fine now and I'll be alot more careful in the future. I greatly appreciate everyone's help on this matter. Thanks!

Sometimes that's the best way to go; at least everything is working now.

Follow the instructions in the Protection link below to help keep it that way.
