My boss got me a new computer last August. He loaded it up with all the required stuff for me to do my job then shipped it up from our main office in NC to MN where I work. For a new computer it seems very slow.
I posted the type of computer I have in my profile. In reading some of the posts, I believe I may have some sort of spyware. I use Adaware on a regular basis, it sometimes picks up on things, but nothing that will improve the speed. I just did a test, I have 1 open window(this one) and I clicked on internet explorer it took 16 full seconds( 1..1000...2...1000etc.) before it opened up my home page which is just a simple google search box. I noticed a lot of talk about hijakthis so i downloaded that and ran it below is what came up(and I have no idea what I am looking at):

my laptop computer that is over 5 years old is 10 times faster than this Dell. Spec wise the only thing my laptop has over this computer is that I upgraded to 512mb ram, and this computer has 256mb. Been thinking about upgrading the ram on this machine.

Yes. I just rebooted and waited for about 5 minutes, then opened up internet explorer it took about 18 seconds to open up. On my much older laptop it takes about 3 seconds. I think I just have a bad computer.

I guess so. You could upgrade you RAM. Or you could just upgrade you whole computer.

Several more things to try that might help. First, download CCleaner (link below). Be sure to update definitions, and then run scans, fixing everyting, under the 'Cleaner' and 'Issues' tab.

Second, have ya already tried defragmenting? This can speed things up sometimes.

Lastly, what are the specs for your computer?

here are my specs to my computer
Dell Dimension 2400
Intel Celeron 2.4Ghz
256 MB DDR SDRAM at 400 MHz
40 GB Ultra ATA/100 Hard Drive (7200rpm

I have 75% free space on the hard drive. I have defragmented.

Hmm, I don't see anything lacking there. Here's a question for ya tho,, is the slowness for everything, or just the internet? I ask this because the problem might be with your internet connection.

If I click on 'my documents' or 'my computer' it will pop up in a few seconds. All applications open up slow. Word, Outlook, IE, Excel, etc., take at least 16 1000's before they start to show up. As i said before this takes 1-2 seconds on my 5 yr old vaio laptop. I have researched some user reviews regarding the Dell Dimension 2400 and see that I am not the only one complaining about how slow they are. My CPU is always maxed out or close to 75%-100% even with only one thing open. I think spec wise the computer should be more than suitable for what I do with it. I just believe I got a lemon. I just want to go through all the steps in attempting to make this computer work for me, before I tell my boss to stop being so cheap and get me a decent machine. He has seen how slow it is, and he was already in the process of getting a new machine for the other person in my office, now he says that if the next machine is faster that i should keep it and give the Dell Dimension 2400 to the other guy in my office. His computer is old has about a 2gb hardrive and is running win 98, it is maxed out, but faster than my Dell.

As a last resort, it wouldn't hurt to try calling Dell and seeing what they say.

In a case like this...a repair may work, but a reformat and clean start may be the way to go.
