I updated a virus scanner a couple of weeks ago and now my computer crawls at a terribly slow pace. I'm not sure if this is coincidence or not, but I can't handle this anymore. Also, when I'm on the computer, every 15-20 minutes it just locks up for about 10 seconds, and then goes back to normal. I can move the mouse around during this time, but all of the windows are frozen and it makes a noise at me (like when you click on something that you shouldn't, or when a microsoft prompt asks if you really want to close something).

Here's my HJT log:

Thanks for any help in advance.

try to reinstall the antivirus

it didn't help. i also started graduate school and am behind a university wide firewall. could that slow my computer down?

does anything look odd on my HJT log?

Thanks for any/all help!

Extract HJT from its zipped folder to a location like C:\HJT\
Nothing major but run HJT and check the following.
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = localhost

Close all other windows and click fix checked.

I see you have Ewido but it is the old version. Here are the instructions for the new version.

Please download and install ewido anti-spyware tool

  • Close all other Applications Select language click Ok
  • Click I Agree
  • Click next
  • Click Install
  • Click Finish
  • Wait Ewido will open main screen automatically.
  • Wait again a few minutes and Ewido Should Auto update itself. If it doesn't click update at top of screen.
  • This in very important to get updates
  • When updating has finished. Close Ewido.

If you have an "always on" connection to the internet, physically disconnect that connection until you are finished with Safe Mode and have rebooted back into normal mode.

  • Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear use arrow up to highlight
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode hit enter.
  • For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site: HERE

You MUST manage to get into Safe Mode for the fix to work.

Make sure to close all open windows/programs/folders. Have nothing else open while ewido performs its scan!

  • Open Ewido
  • Click on scanner top of Ewido sceen
  • Click on Settings
  • Under How to Act click on Recommended Action choose Quarantine
  • Under How to scan all boxes should be selected
  • Under Possibly unwanted software all boxes should be selected
  • On right side under Reports: click on Automatically generate report after every scan.
  • Under What to scan select scan every file
  • Click On scan Tab
  • Click on Complete system scan
  • Let the program scan the machine It can take awhile give it time.
  • When scan has finished At bottom of screen click Apply all Actions
  • Click Save report
  • Click Save Report as (Save as window's screen should pop up.)
  • Click desktop
  • Click Save
  • Exit ewido

While still in safe mode using My Computer delete the following folder if present.
C:\Program Files\Ultimatebet\
Reboot back to normal and run HJT again post a new HJT and the Ewido log.

Ok, I went through and did what you asked. It still is slow, like something is bogging it down. When I close a webpage, it takes 10-15 seconds for it to get off of my screen after I hit the X in the top right corner (it slowly "peels" down instead of just disappearing).

Here's the new HJT log:

I had run Ewido two days earlier in normal mode to see if it would help, and it did find some adwares and malwares.

Where do I go from here? Thanks for your help.

That log's clean so lets look at some other possibilities. You said it happened when you downloaded and update. Try uninstalling the scanner and then trying to navagate the web. Is it faster? If that doesn't work what is your memory and have you installed many new programs that would cause this to happen?

I remember what I installed. I updated Ewido and SpySweeper one day. Then Ewido, NAV, and SpySweeper all wanted to run at the same time. This caused a massive slowdown, so I won't run Ewido as a full time application. It still seems like the new SpySweeper + NAV is draining my computer. I'm running without SpySweeper or Ewido now and it seems better.

Funny thing though, I have SpySweeper closed, but in task manager it shows spysweeper.exe as a process. It seems like there are a million processes in task manager and I have no idea what any of them are doing except using memory.

In short, what combination of NAV/Ewido/SpySweeper should I use, and how do I know/limit what processes in task manager are important?

Thanks!

Well you should no that Norton products are among the worst out there and have been known to cause problems such as slowing down the computer and blocking random websites. If I were you I would Download the Norton removal tool from here and then get a better Anti-Virus program such as Macafee or AVG.(Links to them in sticky) As for the combination of the programs, since your AV program already has a firewall turn off Ewido's Resident shield. I would shedule Ewido and Spysweeper to switch off scanning. So it would be Ewido one day then Spysweeper the next day. Set them to run at like 5:00 in the morning so that they run when nothing is going on. That should make your computer run a whole lot faster.

hello to anyone that can help

on saturday morning i run my laptop (sony vaio) to look on internet and then shutdown, that same afternoon i started my laptop agian and it ran like a sloath with astma... it takes ages to start-up but eventually it calms down to a normal pace then every so often it slows to sloath pace for a minute or so.
I have ran AdAware, Spy-Bot, an i have Norton 2006 which checks for updates (i'm guessing this could be the problem from what i have read).

NO intruders found.....

Why is my computer doing this all of a sudden??

i have de-fragged my C: drive but it has only 3% space left and i have a D: drive which is empty

Help!!!

It still seems like the new SpySweeper + NAV is draining my computer. I'm running without SpySweeper or Ewido now and it seems better.

For what iit's worth, I had terrible problems with the SpySweeper update last month. My pc was unbelievably slow and sometimes would just lockup. My screen would hang, and then would "peel" down just like yours, plus processes wouldn't complete. It drove me mad, and after reading about other peoples many problems with it, I went back to the earlier version and have had no problems with it since. You just have to be alert after going back to the earlier version, because you're constantly being asked by SpySweeper if you want to download the new version - not! My brother found this out the hard way and had to remove the newer version again:twisted:

Good luck
