Hello, you guys might remember me from about 2 years ago when I had a homebuilt 450 MHz machine with Windows 2000 pro. After you guys helped me get that machine squeaky clean, we got new computers. HP Pavilion a600n with AMD Athlon XP 2800+ processor to be exact. Besides the fact that they came with tons of promotional demos and advertisements, as well as HP services and all sorts of other crap that just seemed to get in the way, they ran fine until a couple weeks ago. Two of them now have a problem. THEY'RE COMPLETELY USELESS. One day my cat turned off our surge protector, so one of the computers was without power. It did a hard unexpected shut down because of no power. When I booted it back up, it would freeze unpredictably. There are some things that will instantly freeze it up, like trying to load America's Army or trying to disable a Local Area Connection, but doing other things like browsing the web, it will run fine for a while then just freeze for no reason. I thought maybe my Mobo got fried, or maybe my files. But then another computer on the network got the same symptoms. This other computer was not even connected to the same surge protector, so that pretty much rules out the hard shutdown. The only similar thing that we had done to those computers before they went berserk was when we did the Automatic Windows update that downloaded Windows Genuine Advantage. I'm not sure if it really completely downloaded though, since there's not WGA process running in the task manager. Those updates had been done on the same day that the computers died, so I decided to try a system restore on one of them. I went back to the point before the WGA download and didn't allow it to download. But the computer still freezes. Also, with both computers. when they froze, when you tried to shut down a program it wouldn't, End Task doesn't work, and neither does ending the process. When you tried End Task, the dumprep.exe would start sucking CPU power but wouldn't load the error report program, so i disable error reporting, but now the program still doesn't shut down at all when the computer is in it's frozen state. When I say frozen, i don't mean completely frozen. You can still move the mouse around and try to close running programs, and only for a while you can launch task manager or use the start menu, but you can't start any new programs and you can't end any running ones. What else, this is bizarre, When it's frozen, and your trying to run or end programs CPU usage is extremely low and PF usage is reasonable also. Also, the only way to get the computer to shut down is by doing a hard shutdown (i.e. hold the button in for 3 seconds or how ever long it is). If you try to shut it down properly, it just hangs in the shutting down screen forever. USB port usually won't work now, except for my USB mouse. It only works though if it was already plugged in before the computer boots up. If you try to plug it in afterward, it doesn't work. Maybe it's spyware or a virus, because of the way the problem seemed to spread to the other computer, but it could have just been because we didn't notice the problem until a bit after the first incident since the other computer isn't used as much. But none of our antispyware or antivirus programs could detect anything. We have Norton AV Corporate edition, AVG, spybot s&d, Adaware, all are in latest versions and updates. I know I've given a lot of information, and it might be hard to sort out, but it's a complicated problem to fully explain without showing someone. Well, here's a HJT log of my computer, which was the first to die and was connected to the surge protecter that got shut off. It's kind of long, but hey, what can I say.
