Hi,

This seems to be a common problem having looked through the forums; I can access most websites but some websites such as Hotmail, MSN, Microsoft and DeutscheBahn just refuse to load. I have tried all the possible fixes but to no avail, hopefully you'll be able to spot something in the log, cheers!

Norton is usally the cause of this and is not recommended.(It Sucks)
Macafee is a better program or even AVG.(There are links in the sticky)

Still having problems?

Hi, I followed your instructions and I managed to remove some pretty nasty spyware but it still did not fix the problem. Something occured to me today though; I am trying to fix this problem on behalf of a relative who uses this laptop at home and at work. I decided to take the laptop into their workplace today and attempted to access the sites that couldn't be accessed from home and oddly enough I was able to access them, yet still not from home! Would I be right in thinking that it could be something to do with the home modem/router instead?

Do you have any kind of security on the one at home that might be interfering?

Also Run HJT and go to config>misc tools>host manager and copy and paste the contents to here.

All firewalls/anti-virus have been disabled for the time being to prevent interference. Please find the contents of the HOST file below, cheers.

Ok could you get me a HJT log from the computer the Router and modem are connected to. This might give us a clue as to why you cant access these website at home.

Ok, here is the HJT log from the laptop which is connected to a combined T-Mobile Sinus 154 Wireless Router/Modem via a LAN connection and is also the same laptop experiencing the website trouble:

Run HJT and check the 017 entrie. Close all other windows and click fix checked.

Hi, I removed line 017 but still no luck. What I have found odd though is that even though I have cleared the History, deleted cookies and deleted files, that when I then go into Internet Explorer and begin to type the Hotmail URL the URL pops up to auto-complete even though my History appers to be empy. Could there still be dodgy files lurking somewhere?

Well lets find out if IE is in some way not compatable with the Modem/Router at your house.

Download the Mozilla Firefox Internet Browser From here.

Overall it is a better browser with tabs and more security than IE.

Try acessing the site on Firefox and see if they load up.

I installed Firefox, and tried to access Hotmail and also Google but the page wouldn't load and I received the message "Unable to connect; Firefox can't establish a connection..."

Any ideas? :-)

Actually I'm running out of ideas. I can't seem to find a reason that you cant access certain sites from one router but you can from another. The only reason I can think of is that the Modem/router is set to block those sites or something like that.

I'll talk to some of our mods and see if they have any ideas.

I'll talk to some of our mods and see if they have any ideas.

Only one thing come to mind at the moment, and that is: given the fact that the computer can connect to secure sites at other locations, I'd start looking at the home router's settings.

I'm on my way out to class right now, but I'll come back to this in a few hours. In the mean time, can anyone pass us a link to an English version of that router's manual? I don't read German.

Yeh that's the problem with the router, I'd like to try and adjust the settings on it but the router is only in German. It's in German as I'm currently working in the country. It'd be great if anybody could get hold of an English manual for the router! I will be away for the next 2 weeks so I won't have internet access till then just so you know. Again, thanks for everybodies help!

It'd be great if anybody could get hold of an English manual for the router!

Oh, so we're both in the same boat, eh? I was hoping that you might at least be able to translate some of the settings for us. Hmm... I'll see what I can turn up while you're gone.

I have this exact same problem. I went away for the weekend and when I come back this happens. I tried many things including disconecting my router (linksys wireless g router) and using my cable modem directly to my computer nothing happend. I tried using internet explorer instead of Firefox nothing different. I tried pinging one of the websites with command promp and it failed , but I used an internet ping site and it worked perfect and the websites where online. I used a proxy (ctunnel.com)(atunnel.com) these did not work then I tried firewalldown.com and it didnt work so I clicked the CGI version of the site instead of the PHP proxy version and the CGI site worked and I could go to all the blocked pages. I really have no idea what happend I got rid of norton anti virus about 2 weeks ago since my subscription ran out and I can check viruses with the 20 other free programs and AOL does something too my computer is virus free right now. I have always used a router to get on and the sites worked fine. I dont think I can think of anything else that could have happend. I checked internet settings in the control pannel on windows XP and settings in IE and FireFox. It couldent be the router because I disconnected it and used the modem direct to PC. It is just totally random that this happend any help is greatly appreciated thanks in advance.\\

edit VERY STRANGE now I can access some of the websites I couldent before (kingsofchaos.com)ext.. I tried again and they worked but some other sites that had worked before dont now.

Even though you have the same problem unlike other sites we don't allow piggybacking off other peoples posts, because nobody really has the EXACT same problem as someone else and it can get confusing. So make a new thread with the same post as above and someone will get on it also include a HJT log.

I fixed mine just unpluged my internet for a while released ip first
pluged it back in got a new ip and it works fine and i figured my post might give extra info to help you all out with the other guy

Well try that but i'm pretty sure almost certain that its something to do with the router configurations he has.

Stupid question but how do I release my IP?

* Click on the "Run..." option in your Start menu.

* In the resulting "Open:" box, type "cmd" (omit the quotes) and hit Enter. This will bring up a DOS window.

* At the DOS prompt, type the following command and hit Enter:
ipconfig /release

Thanks for the suggestion 'potatoemaster' but unfortunatley still no success. As I have mentioned earlier in the thread, it concerns me that even if I have cleared the cookies, files and history that when I enter the browser and begin typing 'www.hotmail.com' the URL appears to auto-complete! But then again I can still access Hotmail from the laptop using a workplace connection which leads me to think it could be something to do with the German language router. Are there some particular settings which I should look at in particular on the router which are known to cause this sort of issue?

Are the actual router settings in german or just the manuel because I don't think anyone knows german.

The router settings are in German and also the manual unfortunatley.

Well I Don't know if your willing to buy a new router but if you are then buy one it will fix up the settings and this time you might want to get one in english.

I'm not sure whether at this stage I would buy a new router, the router at the moment was provided by the ISP when I signed up hence the German settings, if I had the choice I would have gone with a Belkin. Prehaps, if you don't mind, you could suggest some possible router settings that I should configure, eg port settings, and I will do my best to locate them on the router using a translator such as Babel Fish.

Not too sure which specific router settings can fix that but I'm sure that DMR knows something about those settings.
