Please excuse the fact that I really will need a bit of handholding through anything complicated. My norton automatic detector keeps saying that I have the bgates[1].exe virus in my temp folder, but can fix/quarantine or do anything with it. Scanning the comp doesn't even pick it up, and I've gone through and cleaned out all the temp folders cookies etc and it's not helped, the virus found message will keep popping up from time to time. Symantec website was no use at all, they don't even have a record of the virus existing.

I've run adaware and spybot, and that got rid of the annoying pop ups that seemed to come with it, but not the virus. Also from time to time the desktop shortcuts will become useless, and if you click on them the screen (everything except the background picture) refreshes. Restarting the computer usually helps temporarily. I could really do with some help, thanks.

Hopefully I've done the hijack this bit right...

Dont see any evidence of that but lets try the following.
Run HJT and check the following.
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = 127.0.0.1
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - <default> - (no file)
O16 - DPF: {5554A026-7282-4C11-A8F1-652D0599CD02} (NMInstall Control) - http://a14.g.akamai.net/f/14/7141/1d...OPE_SILENT.cab

Many thanks. I follwed you instructions, and Ewido found more than just the virus that I was expecting! I have quarantined them and done nothing else to them so far.

Here is the latest HJT log:

I am assuming that all problems are fixed. That HJT log is clean so if your not expiriencing any problems you can marks this thread as solved.(theres a link at the top of this page)

Thanks, do I need to delete the items in quarantine?

I spoke too soon, the problems are not fixed, I just had to restart the computer twice to be able to use the IE shortcut. Any more advice?

Ok delete the items in quarintine.
Also I'm gonna have you clean out your temp folders using crap cleaner.

Begin by downloading CCleaner, and specifically choosing the most recent version.

Then, follow these steps:

1. Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
2. Double-click on the "My Computer" icon.
3. Select the "Tools" menu and click "Folder Options".
4. After the new window appears select the "View" tab.
5. Place a checkmark in the checkbox labeled "Display the contents of system folders".
6. Under the "Hidden files and folders" section select the radio button labeled "Show hidden files and folders".
7. Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled "Hide file extensions for known file types".
8. Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled "Hide protected operating system files". 9. Press the "Apply" button and then the "OK" button and shutdown My Computer.
10. Now your computer is configured to show all hidden files.

Now, install the program. Open it, and choose the 'Options' tab. Inside, hit the 'Custom' tab, and add the following folders (Note: Not all of these files are on every computer. If one of these isn't present, skip it):

C:\Windows\Temp
C:\Temp
C:\Documents and Settings\<Every user listed>\Local Settings\Temp
C:\Documents and Settings\<Every user listed>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5
C:\Documents and Settings\<Every user listed>\Local Settings\History
C:\Documents and Settings\<Every user listed>\Cookies
C:\Windows\Prefetch

After doing this, move back to the 'Cleaner' tab, and inside this, be sure your open to the 'Windows' tab. Inside, check the box labeled 'Custom Files and Folders'.

Next, after following all of these steps, you're ready to scan. Run scans in both the 'Cleaner' and 'Issues'. Note: It might take several scans in each to remove all of the junk.

After doing that run HJT again and post a new log and tell me if you are still having problems.

Probs still aren't fixed unfortunately. it seems that if i swap log ons that's a sure fired way of making the shortcuts stop working.

Here's the HJT

Hmm that leads me to beleive the log on process is infected or damaged.

Please go to Jotti's online scanner and upload and scan the following file.
C:\Windows\System32|winlogon.exe

Nothing was found on the scan. Just a bit of extra info around the same time as this happened, I got a windows update message that told me I needed to reboot the computer, and when I did I got a blue screen. I restarted the computer again and it was all fine. Not sure if that's relevant?

All the annoying antivirus pop ups are back again (winantivirus and sysprotect) now... can anyone help?

Run Ewido again and look for the following files.

  • 1 :%CACHE%\CONTENT.IE5\????????\BGATES[1].EXE
  • 2 :%WINDIR%\TEMP\WIN4D3~1.EXE
  • 3 :%WINDIR%\TEMP\WIN4D3C.TMP.EXE
  • 4 :%WINDIR%\TEMP\WIN4D3D.TMP.EXE
  • 5 :%WINDIR%\TEMP\WIN4D4~1.EXE
  • 6 :%WINDIR%\TEMP\WIN4D41.TMP.EXE
  • 7 :%WINDIR%\TEMP\WIN4D42.TMP.EXE

%CACHE% is probably C:\Documents and Settings\Renata Blower\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\

%WINDIR% is C:\Windows\

If you find any of these delete them.

Post a new HJT log along with the ewido log.

I'm not sure how to specifically find those files on ewido, or whether you meant to just run the scan as normal?

I just scanned in safe mode as before and it found another virus, not sure whether it was missed before or a new one, anyway, here's the report... I've quarantined everything.

Many thanks

Well, I have an idea on how to get rid of the bgates[1].exe. Now I don't really know if this will work...I don't usualy come to this site to help people because I don't really know what to do, but I have an idea none the less.

First start off by showing the computers hidden/protected files. To do this, open up My Computer go to Tools > Folder Options, and click on the "view" tab. Now look for the catagory "Hidden files and folders", below that make sure the "Show hidden files and folders" option is selected, and make sure the "Hide protected operating system files" is unchecked. Now, do a normal search on your computer (Start > Search), searching under My Computer. Search for "bgates[1]" and see if anything comes up.

If something does come up:
If something does come up, and it is the bgates[1].exe, go to the folder containing the virus and delete (Just the normal, right-click-delete) the bgates[1].exe. Make sure you empty your recycle bin, and see if you keep getting messages about that virus. Also be sure you go back to My Computer and change the options back to "Do not show hidden files and folders" and "Hide protected operating system files".

If nothing comes up:

Then I'm sorry, and I cannot help :( But be sure you go back to My Computer and change the options back to "Do not show hidden files and folders" and "Hide protected operating system files".

Sorry I wasn't very clear I meant you should run ewido. Then after you ran ewido go to My computer and use the search button to look for the above files. Also unhide system files and folders like the above post says.

Nope, none of the files came up in a computer search...

Well I just used Spyware Doctor, and it found 361 items... I have removed all of them, and so far, so good, it seems to be working. Fingers crossed the trojans it found are the ones that have been hiding doing all of this!!

Hopefully but it might be one of those things that just rebuilds itself, but hopefully it fixed it for good. If you restart your computer and your still not having problems I would say its fixed. If not then we have to find the file thats rebuilding the trojans.
