Hi all I think I have something nasty. I might guess a trojan but I don't really know enough to say for sure, although I've done my best to research as best I can (which I've added below). I hope someone here can help me.

First my PC
it's a Dell desktop running Windows XP home ed service pack 2 with NOD32 as antivirus and the windows xp firewall
The problem started when NOD 32 internet monitor flashed up the following warning:

Threat detected
alert details
file:
http://dinet.info/n/us48/n.exe
Threat:
a variant of win32/adware.SpySheriff application
Comment:
The object contains a threat to your computer

I had the option to terminate and did so.

a few minutes later I got an alert from NOD 32 file system monitor pointing to
c:\documents and settings\Phil\adgzqeje.exe
This file was quarantined.

This cycle now repeats every time I connect to the internet, first highlighting http://dinet.info/n/us48/n.exe, then a few minutes later c:\documents and settings\Phil\adgzqeje.exe, although the filename changes each time.
I've scanned with adaware, spybot s+d and trojanhunter and they are now saying I'm clean but the problem persists. NOD 32 also does not pick up anything with its on demand scanner, just its internet monitor and file system monitor as above.

I've run hijack this and got the following log:

I've searched for all the O4 items on http://www.castlecops.com/StartupList.html and one that seemed dodgey was gwiz:

Nt System Protocol
ntsystem.exe
Added by the Win32.Rbot.DSB TROJAN! Note: This worm\trojan is located in C:\Windows\System (Win9x/Me), C:\%WINDIR%\System32 (XP/WinNT/2K) Has also used a random name such as gwiz

I checked the system32 directory and found a file called ntsystem.exe that was created on the same day as the problem started.

If anyone can give me any advice on where I go now I'd much appreciate it. If this is the RBot trojan then how can I get rid of it if my virus and trojan scans say I'm clean? Is it just a case of fixing the entry in Hijack this and deleting the ntsystem.exe file? If not has anyone got any other advice?

Sorry for the long post

cheers
Phil

I'm not sure how effective HiJackthis is, but you might try running this program: Spybot Search and Destroy on your computer. And also try this one, Regseeker. Just click the names and the links will take you directly to their download sites. They are freeware programs and so I'm not trying to sell you anything or something. They might take care of the problem by themselves. I love the programs because they don't charge anything to use and probably never will. I'll have to look into Hijackthis, but it seems like it's a program used for detectiona nd not for fixing problems like Spybot it. I really think it might help. Give it a shot.

First of all you could do a system restore if you have a restore point from before the infection.

The above post probably wont do anything but take up space on your computer. Your suspicions were right your are infected with the WORM_SPYBOT.GP.

Lets see what we can do. First go to Control Panel and ADD\Remove Programs and remove the following.
MyWay, My Websearch Bar, or something similar.

Now run HJT and check the followng.
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {4D25F921-B9FE-4682-BF72-8AB8210D6D75} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [gwiz] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntsystem.exe
O16 - DPF: {CE3409C4-9E26-4F8E-83E4-778498F9E7B4} (PB_Uploader Class) - http://static.photobox.co.uk/sg/common/uploader.cab
Click fix checked and then close HJT.

Now Please download and install ewido anti-spyware tool

  • Close all other Applications Select language click Ok
  • Click I Agree
  • Click next
  • Click Install
  • Click Finish
  • Wait Ewido will open main screen automatically.
  • Wait again a few minutes and Ewido Should Auto update itself. If it doesn't click update at top of screen.
  • This in very important to get updates
  • When updating has finished. Close Ewido.

If you have an "always on" connection to the internet, physically disconnect that connection until you are finished with Safe Mode and have rebooted back into normal mode.

  • Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear use arrow up to highlight
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode hit enter.
  • For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site: HERE

You MUST manage to get into Safe Mode for the fix to work.

Make sure to close all open windows/programs/folders. Have nothing else open while ewido performs its scan!

  • Open Ewido
  • Click on scanner top of Ewido sceen
  • Click on Settings
  • Under How to Act click on Recommended Action choose Quarantine
  • Under How to scan all boxes should be selected
  • Under Possibly unwanted software all boxes should be selected
  • On right side under Reports: click on Automatically generate report after every scan.
  • Under What to scan select scan every file
  • Click On scan Tab
  • Click on Complete system scan
  • Let the program scan the machine It can take awhile give it time.
  • When scan has finished At bottom of screen click Apply all Actions
  • Click Save report
  • Click Save Report as (Save as window's screen should pop up.)
  • Click desktop
  • Click Save
  • Exit ewido

While still in safe mode using My Computer Delete the following files/Folders.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntsystem.exe

Reboot back to normal mode and run HJT again.

Post the new HJT log along with the Ewido log.
Still having Problems?

Cheers for the reply Kyle
Sorry been so long replying, but after a couple of days with no reply i assumed no-one was going to so I hadn't checked.
I had already fixed the O4 object and deleted the ntsystem.exe file (but in normal mode). This had stopped the Nod32 alerts so I thought I was probably clear. I had also attempted to clean the O2 no name no file entry before but it hadn't worked, and checjed for Myway etc, but there is nothing like that in my add remove programs.

Anyway followed your instructions to be on the safe side.

No sign of Myway or anything similar in add/remove programs
fixed the two remaining HJT items, but the O2 item still remains
Ran Ewido in safe mode
Checked Ntsystem.exe was still gone - it was.

Cheers again

Phil

Yeah i know why you couldn't get rid of that 02 entry so do the following.

Open Task Manager(alt+crtl+delete)and go to the processes tab. End teatimer.exe and then do the 02 fix using HJT. That should get rid of it. To get teatimer.exe back on just go to the program files folder and click on it or just reboot.

If that fixes everything up you can mark this thread as solved using the link at the top of the page.

Cheers
Sorted now, thanks for all the help and I'll mark as solved.

Cheers again

Phil
