I got hit with a drive-by downloader and ended up with Ultimate Defender installed. Since then it nailed me with something else. I've used AVG, Trend Microcillin, and Norton. They all keep removing stuff, but it is apprently not fixed. I get a message that my administrator has disabled Task Manager when I try to use it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Below is my HijackThis log.

Thanks again.

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Just a quick update - I was able to fix the task manager issue. I still have something, as Microcillin keeps giving me warnings about something in my C:\System Volume Restore

I did use SmitFraud, but do not have that text file. I'll put it up here when I get home from work.

Here is the Smitfraud log.

Hmm, nothing in the Smitfraud log. Can you right click on hijackthis.exe and rename it to analysethis before doing another scan.

==

Can you please do the following.

===============

Scan with HijackThis and then place a check next to all the following, if present:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WinAble] C:\Program Files\WinAble\winable.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WinAVX] C:\WINDOWS\system32\WinAvXX.exe

O7 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System, DisableRegedit=1
...(Unless you've restricted the use of registry editing, have HiJackThis fix this.)

Now, close all instances of Internet Explorer and any other windows you have open except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

===============

Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure you are able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

folders...

C:\Program Files\WinAble

files...

C:\WINDOWS\system32\WinAvXX.exe

-

Note that some of these file(s)/folder(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them in Safe Mode by doing the following:

  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear.

Select the first option to run Windows in Safe Mode hit enter.

-

Reboot.

===============

1. Download this file from one of the following links :

http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/combofix.exe

2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply, along with a new hijackthis log.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Those virus reports you posted were not a result of a scan, just a message to you that the scan was in progress. You need to do it again please. You will eventually get a report saying the either nothing was found, or what was found.

Well I rescanned with Jotti's, as it had a bit more readable result. All the files were clean.

Here's an example:

Glad to hear it. Your log looks clean too. Do you have Symantec products on your PC? I see that you have Trend as an AV. Shouldn't have two AV's if you have.

Yes, I have both Symantec and Trend. I picked up Norton when this thing started because I had let Trend slip out of date. It was also cheaper to buy Norton than renew Trend. I intend to switch over, but at the moment they seem to be picking up different things.

Last night Trend gave me a message about this file:

C:\System Volume Information\_restore{129201FA-B0AC-49B3-96B2-DEB8B91E727B}\RP339\A0042460.exe

I can't access that folder though.

When you have two AV's running, if one of them quarantines a file, the other one will eventually flag it again and try to quarantine it in it's own folder. That will then cause the other to yadayadayada :).

==

Go to Start | Run and type msconfig and press enter.

When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
On the next page, click the System Restore Settings link on the left.

Check the box labelled 'Turn off System restore'.

Reboot. Go back in and Turn System Restore Back on. A new Restore Point will be created.

Note that all previous restore points will be lost.

==

That should rid you of the Trend message.

IMO one does not need to use paid for AV's. I have used free versions for years without problems.

Thanks for all the help!

No worries :)
