Computer Freezing

Several times a day, and with greater fequency now, my computer freezes on me. The mouse clicker stops in the middle of the screen and does not move. Nothing moves. I press the number lock key to see if the keyboard is responsive. Nothing. I do the old control alt delete combo. Absolutley nothing. Its frozen. So I have to restart the computer. Every time I do, when its starts up, the desktop image is not there and it is just a white screen that says active desktop recovery. When I try to restore it, a message pops up that says "an error has occurred in the script". I still can't recover it. Also, when I try to burn cds, it instantly freezes. A week ago I asked about it on Yahoo answers and someone replied and said that I should run it through a registry cleaner. I downloaded a free one and did that, as well as a registry defrag. I ran them, and then tried to burn a cd. It worked. My computer didn't freeze for a couple of days and it was good. But now, it is doing it again. And it seems to be doing it more often. I would like to catch this before it completely crashes my computer. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Ok, I see you have Limewire, which is a great program but tends to give alot of people things they don't want on there computer. Also you have it set to run on startup which means people are constantly downloading things from your computer from the moment you turn the computer on, so I would recommend not having limewire run on startup.

You also have Viewpoint which is relatively harmless but still annoying.

Lets get started, first open control panel and then add/remove programs. Find the following and remove them.

Thanks for the reply. One question. Have you singled out these programs for a reason? I regularly use pokerstars and Bodog. Is there something wrong with them? I don't know what viewpoint is, so I will gladly delete it. But I use those other two everyday. Have they been compromised? Thanks for your help again. I really appreciate it.

Those poker programs just always seem to be troublesome, thats all. You don't have to remove them, but still remove viewpoint(an annoying program that downloads itself to your computer) and remove limewire from the start up.

Ok now I want you to run a scan with AVG Anti-Spyware NOT AVG Anti-Virus

You can download it here. After you finish downloading and installing it, update it and then go to scan>complete system scan. When that is done set it to quarintine everything and hit apply all actions. Now save the log.(There should be a button next to the apply all actions button) After you click that one click save as and save the txt document to my documents. Copy and paste the contents of that text file here in your next post.

Yeah I don't like the fact AVG ignored it, so lets try this.

First try using My Computer to delete SmartDownload.exe. It should be in My Documents. If you can't see it then, at the top of the window go to tools>Folder Options. Then go to the view tab and check the box that says "show hidden files and folders" and uncheck the box that says "Hide protected operating system files and folders". Now check if its there again and delete it. It probably won't let you delete it, thats ok.

Now do this. You might want to print out the following as you will have to go into safe mode, and in safe mode you can't access the internet.

Ok boot into safe mode by restarting your computer and taping F8. A menu should come up and select "safe mode" using the arrow keys and enter.

Once in safe mode try deleting the file again. And after that regardless of what happens run AVG again in safe mode, and save the log again.

Also Include a new HJT log with the AVG log. Thanks for your patience.

Ok boot into safe mode by restarting your computer and taping F8. A menu should come up and select "safe mode" using the arrow keys and enter.

Once in safe mode try deleting the file again. And after that regardless of what happens run AVG again in safe mode, and save the log again.

Also Include a new HJT log with the AVG log. Thanks for your patience.

When I first did the scan in safe mode, it didn't freeze for about a day. Then after I did it, it froze at least 5 times since then.

I ran combofix and it seemed to do the initial scan, quick. Then it said preparing log... and it sat like that for 2 hours and a half. Finally I just stopped it, cause it wasn't doing anything. My time display is still gone, so obviously it still needs to do stuff. What is going on with it?

If you do then go to start>run and type "msconfig" without the quotes. Then go to the startup tab and uncheck anything that isn't vital for startup.

After making sure your did both of these run combofix again and if it take more than say 20 mins creating the log...stop it and we'll go from there.

I downloaded it to documents. I have to search for it to find it. I don't know how it went there, could that be the problem?

Its a huge suprise I am on right now. My computer has been crashing left and right. When I try to turn it on it sits at the black screen forever. Safe mode won't even work. help.

Ok, I'm sorry if I keep writing in this thread, but its the only thing I can do to keep from throwing this computer out the window. I tried running combofix again, it scanned everything but at the end it said something like "couldn't complete cause in object use by another". I can't remember what it said. It flashed really quick. Then it sat at the preparing log screen again. I then tried running spybot, it froze. Turned off computer, then back on. I updated it, ran it again. At the end of the scan it found these:

Woah sorry I was distracted by thanksgiving. There was some smitfraud that one of your scans found so I'd like you to run the removal tools. Heres the instructions.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode:

Restart your computer.
After hearing your computer beep once, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key constantly.
A menu with options will appear.
Choose to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
Choose your usual logon.

Once in Safe Mode, double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe.

Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process. If not, please restart as usual.
A text file will appear with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into a follow-up to this answer.

Also the combofix log is still incomplete which means something is wrong. After running smitfraudfix try running combofix again.

I always have the same tracking cookies. whats that about? Xclean micro doesn't have a log, but I scanned with it in safe mode and nothing came up. Are you familiar with those I mentioned(spyagent.ak and prutect)?http://www.spywareguide.com/spydet_3220_spy_agent_ak.html and http://www.spywareguide.com/spydet_2013_prutect.html

Hmm I can tell your infected but since its hiding itself from the scanner I don't know what to delete. Try renaming HiJackThis.exe to random.exe. Run it again and post that log here. Also I would advise you to disable your internet connection while not using the computer.

Also follow these directions for combofix and see if it works.

Please download this file - combofix.exe by sUBs

* Save it to your Desktop
* Now physically disconnect from the internet and STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields)
* Click on your START button and choose Run. Then copy/paste the entire content of the following quotebox (Including the "" marks and the Symbols) into the run box.

"%userprofile%\desktop\ComboFix.exe" /KillAll

* Click OK and this will start ComboFix.
* When finished, it will produce a log. Please save that log to a Notepad File to post in your next reply along with a fresh HJT log.

Note:
Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

* After you have saved the logs, restart your system to re-enable all the programs that were disabled during the running of ComboFix.

* Reconnect to the internet

* Post the following logs/Reports:

* ComboFix.txt
* Fresh HijackThis log run after all the other tools have performed their cleanup.

I meant that I didn't know if I had shut down all the guards and spywares etc. I wasn't sure if I had turned off all of them. It was boggling my mind, cause there was a lot of them. I'd like to really get combofix working to, obviously. Shouls I delete all traces of the program and then just try downloading it again?
