I just got a Gateway computer with Windows XP SP2 and ever since I got the computer it has been running slow, startups take at least 2-3 minutes and there are times where after I run certain programs the CPU usage would be running at 100% and then the computer would slow down or even crash.

I have 45 processes running at the moment, I know that is waaaay too many processes to have running but I really do not know which of the processes I can safely disable.

Here is a HiJackThis log...

Pleeeeeeease make this computer run faster. :)

Try turning off the Search Indexing. Click Start, then Search. In the Search Window, in the left pane, click on the link for "Change Preferences"...then click on the link for "With Indexing Service (for faster local searches)". Tick the button next to "No, Do not enable Indexing Service" and click "Ok".

Try opening My Computer...any difference?

Have you yet taken the time to go through and trash all of the extras that pc companies like to throw in? I see that you have numerous antivirus, and other such items. I would get rid of all of the trial junk, and anything else you don't want. After that your systray will calm down, and then we can check your msconfig and uncheck what does not need to be on.

Yes, but that is the thing, I do not know what to disable or delete. I am looking in the processes area right now, I have 43 of them running at the moment, and there are all of these names like csrss.exe, smss.exe, symwsc.exe, and such and I don't know which ones I can safely disable.

I asked about removing some of that stuff because you have Norton and McAfee running by the looks of your log. For starters, is there a reason why you would have both of these running at the same time, and then again is there a reason you even have both programs on your computer? I have not yet had time to completely look at your log, but stuff like C:\Program Files\Google\GoogleToolbarNotifier\GoogleToolbarNotifier.exe
do not need to run. You also might try disabling auto updates for several of your programs. I personally like to control when my updates go through. But I will check on your logs a bit later, I am currently trying to solve a network issue where I work.....

Okay, take your time.

Those two programs were installed when I got this computer. So which one, if not both, am I better off uninstalling?

It is really a matter of personal preference, but I use Norton. Yes it does take a lot of space, and it can be power consuming, but I find that it is thorough. Others will swear by McAfee and tell you that it is the one to use. You might take a little bit of time and research online the features of each, and then establish from there which one you would like to keep. When you have made your choice, nix the other. After you remove one or the other, post an updated log, and we will look at it.....

Okay, I decided on keeping Norton. Here is an updated log.

Ok, I just thought of something, but I will need some more information. Which model of Gateway did you buy (include processor, ram-and ram speed)? I have also noticed that you have the google toolbar updater, adobe acrobat 7, digital media reader, and a messenger running at startup (I would turn off the auto updates for these and you will then just check for updates on these when you want to). It also looks like you have the gateway cares program sitting there as well.........depending on whether or not you will use it, it is one of those that you could get rid of (you might check on warranty stuff before you do though). After you get me the model number, I will be able to provide some additional thoughts on how speed up your computer.....

I also forgot to ask you to go to the run option in your start menu, type msconfig, and then copy a screen shot of the startup tab (im not sure if you can add pictures to this forum, but if not copy the text under the startup tab and add it to your next post). This will help out as well.......

I don't think you can but I can upload screenshots onto imageshack and post links here.

This, according to the description, is a Gateway 3310 with an Intel Celeron D processor at 2.66 Ghz, 512 MB RAM, and a 80 GB hard drive.

I am now at work, so I will check these out and hit you back in a couple of minutes...

Okay, thanks for the details. I think one of your main problems is the lack of memory. You need to UPGRADE!! Only having 512mb of memory is quite low. Try going for at least 2gig (400Mhz or higher). The effects will be be a dramatic change from your lowly 512. If you do not have the budget for it now, i suggest saving until you do. On the other hand what we can do to help your startup time is disable the following in msconfig under the startup tab...

adobe update manager
google toolbar notifier
adobe reader
nero check
GW Cares (that is the gateway cares program...I have a Gateway and I deleted it)
Remind_XP (this is used to remind you to register your CD Creator)

To disable them running in startup simply uncheck the boxes. Try this and let me know if it helps at all......but your main issue is your lack of RAM!!

Have you tried turning off the Search Indexing?

Could you post a new log file? your first log file is separated and jumbled up

I was planning on upgrading the RAM very soon.

I disabled those items. While start-up is still rather slow it is beginning to run like it should.

Ok, well keep me posted when you install the upgrade.....I guarantee that it will blow you away with the difference in perfomance. Good luck!

Norton is a huge resource hog. I wouldn't hesitate to get rid of it (All of it) and install AVG or AVAST. I'm a Windows Defender fan also.
You can Dump "GWcares", Remind XP, The Adobe stuff and msmgs. Big fix sounds like BS.

Alright, I downloaded Avast and Norton is gone and startups are a little faster now.

I thought I would display my latest HiJackThis log:

This is kind of an unrelated matter but something new just came up. I have a DVD rom drive on this computer. At first, DVDs I play on here were [;aying just fine. But, as of late, the DVDs are skipping and I know that it isn't the DVDs I play because it skips with DVDs I haven't even touched before. And it's not just the movie either, when I move the mouse, it also seems to skip with the movie. Other movies that I play on the computer play without problems, only when I play a DVD. What could the problem be?

What type of video card do you have? Also post if it is onboard or not, and let me know what speed it is. I am guessing (if you did not upgrade) you probably have an onboard with 128mb/shared. I could be wrong, but looking at what others have gotten with your model, this is what they normaly have. Have DVD's ever played well on your machine? Also what size and type of screen do you have?

go to services(run->services.msc) and stop and restart the following services:
-logical disk manager
-Plug and Play
See if it works and post reply

Didn't work.

It says I have Integrated Intel Extreme Graphics 2, that is all I know about it at the moment.

you have access to more than one computer test it on a different system to get faster results

20085115501_mcinfo.exe

this struck me as odd, it may be nothing but it is in a temp folder (as are a couple of other processes) i would delve into these, and any idea as to which processes take up the cpu?

those are the ones you generally have to look out for
