even firefox is unable to access my secure sites!

:(

What do you mean?

see my other post about "unable to access secure sites". apparently, no one seems to know what is going on. i would like to avoid cleaning out my hard drive... especially if that doesn't solve anything...

jnutty, please continue with your original topic as the place to pose your question. This thread is not an appropriate place to repost it. If no-one has replied for a while, it's acceptable to repost yourself, asking if anyone has further suggestions, just to 'bump' the topic back to top of page, but please don't continue to do that. Once is enough ;)

Well, it seems jnutty has run into the same problem i did 2 tears ago, in that a lot of websites won't accept Mozilla,FireFox,Netscape, etc, etc, etc. The majority of websites are written for Internet Explorer. I go with what works. I've yet to see any evidence that FireFox is any better than IE. Just because FireFox changes the name of it's "fixes" to Upgrades doesn't mean it gets fixed any faster than IE.

It does get fixed faster than IE. The "renaming" of the patches is quite irrelevant, as you said. The real reason that it gets fixed faster is that the people behind it don't have to apply the patch (and test it) to over 400 slightly different versions of the product - like Microsoft does. Here's a recent eWeek article about the IE patch procedure.

Sending me off to read about how long it takes to patch IE,still doesn't prove that FireFox gets fixed any faster.

Seems to me to be rather irrelevent how fast Firefox is 'fixed' in relation to IE. In the course of my employment I have to regularly use a wide range of browsers. Simple fact is that IE, unless configured so high in its 'security settings' that it becomes almost non-usable, lets through a helluva lot of spyware etc., while alternatives like Firefox, Mozilla or Opera do not. When it comes to the amount of crap a person needs to contend with, I'm always going to choose the option which lets through the least.

When this topic was created, Firefox was the best available alternative in that regard, and that particular situation hasn't changed since!

I agree with Catweazle. IE is useless when it comes to security. And Firefox has a lot more useful features that IE doesn't have (Tabbed browsing, anyone? woot.), like plugins. Do the right thing. switch to Firefox.

(i'm biased, but you can't say i'm wrong)

kosmoe, the fact is that it does get fixed faster. IE gets fixed in a few months, firefox in a few days (the max is usually a week) if you use the nightly build. I don't need a news article to back me up - just use firefox and watch how fast patches become available. I'm beginning to suspect that you're a troll.

I wanna here some thoughts on the Netscape browser, since I don't use it(ever). And by the way guys, here is one interesting article between the comparison between IE and the good ol' Mozilla FireFox.

http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-3000_7-5561073-1.html?tag=fs

FireFox still leads, but the only thing I don't like about firefox is that it doesn't support activeX content. Although that is a good thing, it doesn't always turnout that like. Especially when your talking about some websites not working with Firefox.

Websites which need ActiveX:
Microsoft Updates
Most Spyware scanning websites online(Pest Scan)
Anti-virus websites(Trendmicro)

And manxy others.....

Don't take this the wrong way. I am not trying to support IE, but I am laying down some ups and downs. !!!!

Bill, the 'ieView' plugin (http://ieview.mozdev.org/installation.html) for Firefox and Mozilla is an essential extra. With it installed you simply need right-click relevent links and choose "Open in Internet Explorer". The browsers do NOT stop you from accessing such sites, they simply allow you to restrict having ActiveX in operation for all but trusted and necessary sites.

Having started to use firefox in yahoo chat I can't use my tab key. What has happened?

When opening yahoo chat with firefox, I find I can't use the tab key when chatting. Anyone know why?

Hey catweazle...everytime i try to update FF to get themes it says no updates are available. I have no themes so how can no updates be avilable. Also it will not let me get ieview. Any insight?? Thanks for your help in advance!

A troll? Been called a lot of things but never a troll. lol Anyway, i switched from cable to DSL. Was having all kinds of trouble. So i thought what the hell. Downloaded Firefox and it solved all the problems i'd been having.

kosmoe - you see the truth at last. :)

holy cow....This sounds like the ageless Mac vs. Windows arguement. It's such a...pointless arguement. "The underdog does things so much better." If it's so much better, why is it the underdog then?

Shame on you. What rhetoric. It's utter ignorance to say that FF can't be or won't be or isn't being exploited like IE.

and heres something from last week:

I want you to tell me that if you had your way and FF was as prolific as IE, hackers arn't going to shred that open source code and make people beg for something new.

Yes, firefox does occasionally have exploitable holes. However, they are patched faster than IE holes are (google it, don't ask me to go find evidence for you).

Last week eh? That would be true if it were August 10th 2004 instead of August 10th 2005. Obviously firefox was less secure when the 1.0 release hadn't even happened yet.

Yes, hackers will be more likely to make exploits for firefox when it is more popular. However, these exploits will work for rather limited amounts of time - not months like IE exploits.

:)

Now I'm the Idiot... :o

It was the wrong link, but it really doesn't matter.

The only way that I can think of to make anything computer-related secure is not to use it. case-in-point: everything has a bug/loophole/exploit, it's just a matter of choosing the one that's less vulnerable.
One thing I can assure you all is that since I changed from IE to FF, I got rid of the spyware/adware/hijack problems which was the original reason why I switched browsers.

Currently use Mozilla and have to say that I like it a lot. It does take a while to cold start it though, but the features as well as the security as opposed to IE are phenominal.

I do get tired of seeing this argument on forums. The fact is that IE is insecure because it's integrated into the OS structure. This means that any weaknesses exploited in the coding of IE can then affect Windows. This wasn't such a problem a few years ago because IE was a separate program before Windows '98.

Windows Vista will be different though. From what I have heard, IE7 will be separate from the operating system, which means any flaws in the browser's programming shouldn't theoretically be as serious. However, I am going to wait and see reviews of the finished product before I pass judgement on it.

As for the quality of IE6 - I don't rate it at all. MS haven't produced a new browser for years and as a result the rendering engine is old and clunky. Firefox and Opera have capitalised on this by producing relatively newer products that are much faster, standards compliant, highly customisable and can be installed by choice.

One of the reasons IE6 is the most used browser in the world is because it's part of the most used OS in the world. As it just about does the job for the average home user, they are not going to want to change or even explore alternatives.

I use Firefox and don't intend to change anytime soon. The only times when I use IE are to test the rendering of web pages I create.

Oh - one final thing. ActiveX controls are proprietary and can therefore only be used in IE. This means that users of another browser are missing out on what could be crucial content. These controls can be slow, but fortunately not all of them are.

I have both IE and Firefox on my PC and I normally end up switching between the two to get a website to display lol. I am using IE7 and for some sites it just gives up bt then again the amount of times of seen an error message for connecting to a server in firefox could not be counted on a all of my fingers and toes (which I have all of). I personally think that IE is easier to use and is faster at loading pages, but people are right when they sa it crashes more than Firefox. I think I will stick with both and let Vista make the decision.

Bought a new puter. It came with Windows XP. No problems with IE.

Personally I love opera. Tired the others. Opera is just a better browser. I got this browser so set up the way I want it, other browsers seem cumbersome. It will read web pages for me. I can and have set up my right click to access programs and do things just the way I like. I have used it for about a year. Still amazed how I can make this browser just the way I like it.

My laptop has all the three web browsers running, that is firefox 2.0.0.3, Opera and IE 7,,
Firefox has always been fast and with far less distabences than IE,
However , it has been slowing down of late(not responding for some time) and i have opted for Opera which has'nt given me any problems.
Some add on of Firefox also tend to slow it down,,
I guess i will hang in with Opera for now..

I like MyIE2 the best (Now called Maxthon)

Popup blocker,etc.........

Very nice :)

I have IE, FireFox and Opera installed on my PC.
I like FireFox very much although I use the other two occasionally.

firefox RULES!!!!

definatly change to it! ;)
