during repair xp home denies access when i type copy X:\i386\ntfs.sys drive:\windows\system32\drivers to re-enter the driver. why? is there an easier method or will i have to wipe and start again?

Are you doing this from recovery console or a normal session?
If its a normal session why not use sfc /scannow
