My sound will play on my VLC media player but not on common things like you-tube or anything with sound online. Only my media players play sound through my speakers. Does anyone know a good place to start looking?

You could start by reinstalling your sound drivers and see if that helps, if not post back with more details about your machine, OS and problem...how long it has been happening etc...
