Here's the history of this problem. I'm at my wit's end, but before I do a complete Win 7 re-install, I wanted to see if anyone had any ideas.

On Friday 6/17 I allowed Windows Update to install 36 [or thereabouts] language packs. I don't need 'em, but I wanted to get them off the Update window. I left it to install over the weekend.

When I came in Mon. Morning, the computer was locked up. I rebooted and on the black Welcome screen I got the following message [more or less]: "Applying Update * of 616930". I had not seen that kind of update before; normally you see it on the blue screen just prior to login following the black Welcome screen. Nevertheless, I let it go for about an hour, and when I saw that it had only done 10% of the 616,930 updates, I got worried that I was in the midst of a malware attack. I turned off the machine and restarted.

The machine then put me into an endless loop of attempting to install updates on that blue screen just prior to login. It would attempt to install updates, then say it update failed; reverting; then reboot. Over and over again. I tried going to the repair console, to no avail. Attempts to do a system restore from safe mode failed. Finally, I attempted a safe mode command prompt, and while it gave the same update failed; reverting message, I nonetheless was allowed into Windows. At some point shortly after I was able to get back into Windows, a restart caused the same initial problem: "applying update * of 616930." This time I let it complete, and I was able to get all the way into Windows.

Current status: the computer acts normally, except that system restore and Windows update do not work. I have run superantispyware, malwarebytes antimalware, and MS security essentials scans, with no improvement. I have bought and run multiple times an online app called Reimage, which purports to scan and then repair the computer by replacing incorrect or corrupted files with proper files. While it seems to have stripped off some of the already installed Win 7 security updates, it has not fixed the 2 identified problems. I have attempted an upgrade install using the Win 7 install disk. It failed. I have also attempted to uninstall those language packs, but each time I have tried, the proedure has failed. Bottom line: I can't update, and I can't restore to a system state prior to the onset of trouble.

I don't think this is a malware problem; I think it results from interrupting the update application. Nevertheless, I'm not that bright on all this stuff, and SAS picked up some infections, so I can't rule out malware.

So, aside from a reformat and reinstall of the OS and the applications, which I have been trying to avoid, I'm about out of ideas. Below, for what it's worth, is a HijackThis scan log I just did.

I hope someone out there can help....

Anybody out there?

Since no one wants to answer you I'll volunteer my answer
Format and reinstall, do hope you have your important data backed up
or at least can get to it and copy it.
Why you downloaded other language programs I don't understand there is a setting that you can delete off the list updates you don't or won't require, always check and make sure you wait before taking updates just because Microsoft says you need them
Google Brian Livingston and you will come up with his websirte, join it they put out reports on all microsoft updates and let you know if one is a problem or not.
If you can't find Brian let me know and I will send his website address to you,
Sorry to be the bearwer of bad news.

Yeah, I figured out -- after the fact, of course -- how to hide updates you don't want to look at. Stupid on my part. Stupider to interrupt the applying updates routine on the Starting Windows screen. I think -- as does the 2 consultants who have looked at the problem -- that interrupting that caused all the problems. I'm backing up my data now and will likely reinstall tomorrow.

BTW, a bit thumbs up to Reimage.com. I spent $69 on their service, which analyzes and repleces corrupted system and app files. I tried it and it didn't work, so I opened a ticket with them. They had a guy get on my computer via remote control for 4 hours today to troubleshoot. He threw his hands up in despair, too, and said "Reinstall." Then he agreed to refund my $69, with no fuss whatsoever. Even though their services didn't work for me, they sure spent the time to try to make it work. Good for them!
