I am having problems with my computers startup speeds. It takes too long to load and will freeze at anytime once it has loaded. I am running on windows xp with SP2.

just to add i have already tried to disable programs that are set to run on startup but the problem is still occuring.
a dearth of info there, jez. for a start you could try diskcleanup and defrag from accessories > system tools [i'm just guessing that you may be running out of disk space - if you are, remove some unused stuff, or the junk ].
thanks for the help gerbil but i have done a defrag recently and also a disc cleanup and therefore windows advises me not to defrag. Also I have over 60GB free on my hd out of around 115GB so i think im ok for disk space.
are you out of memory?
how much ram do you have?
Go into task manager - performance tab and look under Physical Memory (K) and post what the Total memory is
umm..lessee... so many things to check... chkdsk.. try that - it will want to run on reboot - let it. It's the only way it can check the system drive [C: usually]. Go start > run, type
chkdsk C: /f and answer Y.
jbennet, i have 512mb ram, gerbil i did chkdisk a few days ago and still it starts up slow. It does seem to run a bit faster when i press F8 and choose start windows normally though

jez, i think you neeed to decide between bitdefender and McAffee. Two is one too many. Try uninstalling one.
Next restart HT, do a Scan Only and place checkmarks against all the following, and press Fix Checked..

Now download this temp file cleaner from http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1 --click in the download window to run it, and when ATF Cleaner opens go Select all, and then Empty Selected.
Next click Firefox [if you have that browser..] at the top, Select All again, and Empty Selected again. Follow that procedure also if you have Opera.
Close ATF.
[If you wish, save ATF Cleaner to your desktop or a cleaning folder somewhere as it is a fairly useful tool for occasional use.]
Make sure that in control panel you reove all old java versions - i see that you have the latest.
There; fix what you wish and come back with another log and your guidance on performance... :)

ok ive done all work needed on HT but i don't know why mcafee is running because it failed to install. how can i remove what its doing?
Ah. Okay, you don't have all the elements, but you do have siteadvisor.. I don't think much of the idea, but that's just my own opinion. It really is up to you, but uninstalling it and fixing these should clear it, then you would delete any remaing .exe and .dll files and the pgm folders, and finally reinstall siteadvisor if you so wish. Basically i'm saying that without loading siteadvisor on my own machine I cannot tell which processes come with it, and which remain from a mcaffee AV installation [attempt]. IE7 has some issues with it, i think.

Gerbil HELP!!!!!! my pc has gone haywire, bitdefender and avg are having firewall problems and so is windows firewall!!!! Is there a virus on my pc doing this??
Lessee... I do not see an AVG firewall running although the service starter is there at O23...? Try uninstalling AVG and Bitdefender, then with windows firewall still running follow these instructions to remove any Mcaffee files remaining:

If you are still concerned about a virus, next go online and do a scan at Pandasoftware....

-select a link to the scan... free online virus scan...., enter a valid? email and follow through, choosing My Computer for a full system scan.
If you only go the those two sites you should be safe with no AV... Post the log panda produces here if it finds anything.
Reinstall Bitdefender and AVG after a restart.
Looks a bit of a severe solution, I know.... but I can only guess that some AV remnants are fouling things up.
