I received a call from a family member, who forgot the password for her user account. She is running XP on a Dell Dimension, and that is the only account set up on the computer. Her password hint was no help. Is there a way to get around that to get to the desktop? Can the password be changed or removed another way?

yes there is always a way to get around things. I think your best bet is to use a third party password resetting utility to set the password. You can try EBCD utlity.
