Though many, including myself, prefer to use multiple partitions, for a new-comer like yourself, only using 1 partition would be advisable. Since you stated that you were switching from Vista to Linux, Can I assume that you in fact, do not want Vista on your harddrive? If this is the case, your best bet would be to select the largest partition, make it bootable, and set the mount point to '/'
err, I don't have access to a Debian system at the moment, so just as root aptitude update; aptitude upgrade; aptitude search wifi
. You should find it.
>Wifi. It sees my card, sees my network, tries to connect, then fails. I can connect from my iPod, nit not Ubuntu. Aaaah.
I've experienced similiar problems when installing on my parents/relatives computers. Try using wifi-radar to connect instead of the default network manager ( aptitude install wifi-radar
). If this doesn't work, just use iwconfig
, which should definetely work.
cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf
A really lame method of generating a usable xorg.conf is booting up w/ Ubuntu and stealing it. ;-)
>Do I have an odd-ball install, or what?
Probably not, I just haven't used Debian in awhile.
Could you just post your xorg.conf file? (/etc/X11/)
Mine? ;-)
try dpkg --configure xserver-xorg
Ah I don't know I haven't used debian in a while, things might of changed... Regardless you could just edit your xorg.conf manually.
Ok if you use firefox: type about:config
in the address bar, then search ipv6 and you should get some variable called ipv6Disabled or something of that sort. Set it to true.
If your not using firefox than add the lines:
alias net-pf-10 off
alias ipv6 off
to /etc/modprobe.conf
Have you tried disabling ipv6?
I had a similiar problem when I was using debian awhile back. As Jbennet suggested, do dpkg --reconfigure xserver-org
and ONLY select the res of our monitor when configuring.
I would recommend Arch Linux, as it is i686 compiled and relatively simple.

>Since you don't seem to be understanding the point I'm trying to get at, let me try another way. Mac OS X is officially certified as Unix. Since it's Unix, it can run Unix software. Now do you get it? It doesn't have to be written on a Macintosh to be able to be considered "Mac software".
This really isn't a valid point. Even though Mac is UNIX, most Linux and BSD software does require a seperate Mac port.
>well it's true.
That doesn't strike me as a particularly convincing argument.
>That's incorrect, there is more software available for Windows than for any other operating system.
I'm dubious.
Your position is completely indefensible and just as equally asinine. Not only is your position so ridiculous and inane, but your presented argument is extremely weak. Do you realize how much work farming requires? Do you realize the poverty and deprivation an agrarian society creates? (for most that is)
>How long do you think it could last?
Anarchy, chaos, and destruction? Quite a while. You act like this is a good thing.
>I want your honest opinion...would you embrace such a simple lifestyle??
A backbreaking brutal lifestyle with murder, rape, and theft rampant? Call me a hedonist, but I enjoy technology and the amenities it provides us with.
>Well, let me start off....personally, i wouldn't mind the use of a bicycle or an animal for travel...no gas pumps for me...
Would you enjoy the aforementioned?
>Do you think we could gradually, become that way...or has the world become too advanced....too complexed...to greddy and too competetive to do so???..
No, most people would not want to "become that way" as you so eloquently put it. I suspect the reason for this is that the majority of the world is more intelligent than you. (not that that's saying much, for you or the world)
I suggest you try using your brain before you post, it might have a positive impact on the quality and content of your writing.
EDIT: You are a perfect example for my sig.
>The crappy logo:
>lol they had to ban the advert because it gave people seizures
It's positively disgusting... Are the trying to make it look like graffiti?
I don't believe so, but there is a C compiler for the hp-50g (A much superior calculator if I may interject my own opinion)
An easier pain free way is just nvidia-xconfig
>is it any different from christians praying for a safe journey? or any other form of praying in times of need.
No its not any different.
offtopic but the wig looks pretty stupid... Do all UK judges wear them?
Wait a second... I thought this was the 21st century...
installing vmware tools might speed things up a bit
I would agree that, like most of our bloated under effective government, it needs to be rebuilt. But the poll options are a bit misleading.
mm apparently you didn't believe me.
No. Its completely virtual. Your harddrive for all intents and purposes to debian is the space you alloted when first creating your virtual machine. (usaully 4-8 gb)
Did you burn the image or is vmware booting from the image on your computer? I haven't used vmware extensively but booting from a real cd would probably be easier.
For just programming vmware should be fine. Debian is pretty straight forward you shouldn't have problems.
>After talking to a friend, I'm thinking of running Virtual PC instead of partitioning my drive. Anybody know of pros and cons regarding both methods?
If you want to run a virtual machine I would recommend vmware server edition, its free and _a lot_ faster and better than Virtual PC.
pros about Virtual Machines:
* easy to set up and it allows you not to partition your harddrive
* allow you to run multiple operating systems at the same time
cons about Virtual Machines:
* very slow and usaully don't support 3d graphics (I think vmware fusion does but im not sure)
About partitioning your harddrive most linux distros come with partitioning tools. The tool depends on the distro, so what distro are you planning to use?
>How does the alphabet wrap around from the letter 'Z' to the letter 'A' while counting forward ????
I think you need to recheck and verify you posted the instructions correctly. If you did then your instructor is pretty stupid person.
I think it starts counting backward. (even though that really doesn't make sense)
if your learning sdl look at some of my sdl functions under c++ code snippets. I think you will find them helpful. I know I do!
>To answer your question, yes there are ways, but no there aren't any good ones. For example, you could add a boolean flag parameter that says whether to create or not. But that changes the meaning of the function and gives it two jobs rather than one. Bad idea.
not if by default it equals to false.
oh mines never failed...what speed do you burn them at?
um whats wrong with a cdrw? I burn distros to cdrw all the time?
you did not initialize a, b, c, d, and radius. Get the input than assign.
I overclocked my video card 13% and did not notice a difference...
You don't need to, but it does increase system performance (well, depending on what percent you oc the cpu.. ~5-10% does nothing)
it increases performance by 5%-10% ;-)
Do you want to read the contents of the folder?
So do you have a solution without using system calls?
I mean lets say you have three text files in one folder.
the path for them would be:
c:\\<whatever>\\yourfolder\\file1
c:\\<whatever>\\yourfolder\\file2
c:\\<whatever>\\yourfolder\\file3
yeah, its just like reading any other files. Just instead of the file name, but the path to the file. If your using windows you need two backslashes.
So you over clock for speed, but don't that lead to a hotter unit and I through you wanted to keep temp down. It's like you put a NO2 kit on your car motor, but if you don't rework the lower end,ie crank, you'll blow it up the first time you switch it on. So to keep temps down you water cool the cpu, right?
You do not have to watercool cpus! I good solid fan will suffice. (obviously not stock)
they have just recently reached a upper boundary on how high they can clock their processors...hence the recent focus on efficiency. Intel is now like AMD...
