Have you tried enabling the Stero Mix function in the Sound options within Control Panel? I'm assuming you are using Windows 7 here, so go into Sound and the the tab that says Recording. Right click and choose "Show Disabled Devices". Then right click on the option that says Stero Mix and choose Enable.
From there download Audacity for free from the internet (or alternatively use whatever program you currently use) and start recording from any source playing from your computer.

Sadly so... Unless you have a disc lab nearby so they can at least recover the data off of it! Expensive though going through a disc lab.

Serunson 413 Posting Maven

Which means that the HDD itself would be fine, as the circuit board died rather than the physical disc!

Serunson 413 Posting Maven

Is the HDD clicking or clunking or making any unwanted noises when the power cable is in, or is there no sound at all? If there is no noise's at all, then the HDD isn't getting power to it, which if you've tried different molex plugs, its going to be the HDD controller board that has died most likely. What make and model of HDD is it?

Thank you Scru for that one, if they are still about!

Serunson 413 Posting Maven

If it is still in warranty, definitely worth taking back to the retailer for them to examine in. MOBO's shouldn't overheat! They will offer to repair it, and if they can't they have to replace it with a brand new one. If they repair it in store, make sure to test it before you leave to make sure the problem is fixed.

Your missing a Microwave there. You can't do anything without a source of radiated food...

Serunson 413 Posting Maven

Best advice I would suggest is that if your North Bridge is getting too hot, invest in an internal fan for it. Measure what size the heatsink on their already is, and buy an appropriate sized fan to go along with it. You would be able to hook it into one of the MOBO fan points, if not get a molex adapter for it to hook directly into your power supply.
If your NB doesn't have a heatsink on it already, get a miniature chipset heatsink and fan combo (available widely online and in PC shops).
If either of those do not fix your problem then get back in contact with us here and we can think of what else could be causing these 10 minute shutdowns. Although it very much does sound like an overheating issue somewhere along the line.

In case anyone else gets this issue - resit your CPU, and enable Profile1 in the RAM settings in the BIOS. Has fixed mine after 5 reboots (touch wood).

Serunson 413 Posting Maven

Hello Daniweb yet again I have returned! This time with a rather weird issue...

My latest custom build PC has 6Gb of Corsair RAM, but my copy of Windows 7 Pro x64 says "6.00Gb (4.00Gb usable)"

Any ideas? I have gone through the internet to look for various solutions but no one seems to be able to provide a straight answer. Windows's Memory Test comes up with no errors what so ever, and in Task Manager it only reads there being a total of 4Gb as 'usable'. Any ideas why the other 2Gb decides not be used? Re-seating the RAM does work, but upon reboot it then decides to revert back to this message.

Any ideas anyone?

Serunson, out.

Serunson 413 Posting Maven

Better looks than Vista, and runs like XP, this is how Vista should have been, silly microsoft!

Also hi again =P

Serunson 413 Posting Maven

exactly my point :D
As i hinted at, i bet they will 'try' to make a games console, the 'iStation' perhaps.
Or even a hand-held version 'iBoy'

Serunson 413 Posting Maven

Well the iPhone has been launched, woop.
Now i ask the question, "What is the point?".
A device which combines 2 items which most people already own, a phone and an MP3 player. Now i own a phone and an MP3 player (not an iPod i must add) so why would i want to buy a device which merges the two? Is that not pointless? Having a phone, an MP3 player and then an iPhone?!? What is the real point of having a repeated thing? In fact it takes away practicality.
If i have an MP3 player an a phone, i can choose to leave one at home, or take one or the other with me to somewhere, but with the iPhone, you are constantly taking around both things in an expensive format. So this could compromise the buyers safety.
So why then do i need an iPhone? If i have a phone which can play MP3, and i have an iPod, why would i need an iPhone?
To me it seems pointless. I don't intend to buy one, so apple have lost another customer, (i use iTunes store very rarely, gift cards etc.).
So yet another pointless gadget has entered the market, what will apple make next, a games console!?

We shall wait and see for the next 'i' product.

The ever lasting, Serunson.

Hi again,

Bennet has been ranting about how useless and crappy dells are (we know that already) now he has turned his Scottish anger to the simple company of Apple.
(Bennets anger is here: http://www.daniweb.com/blogs/entry1474.html )

Quite funny if you read it

But to the defence of Apple (i am crazy) there purpose is for graphics and media, they do this great. Microsoft cant compete with them at media and graphics because windows is designed to make money for Mr Gates. Yes everything with 'i' in it is apple related, it is just a brand name, like Keloggs or Windows. Stop whining bout it.

In other news, my braces were of this afternoon! unexpected how it was, they are finally off, good riddance, lightning attractor or what ~ metal near brain is a big no.

Anyways half of my AS exams are already done, only physics and 1 maths remain, wish me luck Daniweb.

Good night

Doubt it would be age (being around 6/7 months old) and power spike is out because the wall switch was turned off, and it runs through a surge strip as well. Anywhere (In UK) can i get the HDD repaired for as low a cost as possible?

Serunson 413 Posting Maven

Hello again my fello daniweb people, hope you can help me out with this interesting problem.

On friday i powered down my machine, turned off all the plugs and left it to go to work (i leave it at uni as i work closer to my actual house). I return from work on sunday, turn onthe plugs, power up my machine, and it fails to boot. Mentions that there is no primary boot device. So i check the BIOS and lo and behold my HDD isnt being detected. So i open up the case to check all the cabling, all fine, so i try moving the sata cable too and from the 4 different SATA conectors, trying the 3 different SATA power cables, all to no avail. I have also tried a friends SATA cable which also doesnt work. I have even tried my HDD in his computer, and it doesnt detect it, as a master or a slave.

What on earth could have gone wrong??

Any suggestions anyone?

Serunson.

Serunson 413 Posting Maven

Hello my fellow techies, long time no see again!

Right i have gone and built my own machine with the following specs:
Motherboard : ECS GeForce6100PM-M2
RAM : 2Gb DDR-2 800MHz (2 sticks of 1Gb each)
OS : Windows XP pro SP3
Gfx card : XpertVision 9500GT Super
DVD : Samsung DVD+/-RW drive
Sound Card : Apollo PCi 5.1 Sound Card
PSU : 570W

At totally random occurrences(can happen at the login screen, running applications, opening applications etc) my computer locks up with only the mouse able to move. If i then click the left mouse button 5 times, the motherboard makes 1 beep, and then the entire system freezes, causing me to hit the reset button on the front to try again.
I have absolutely no idea what is wrong! Please help!
Attached is a copy of what Speedfan shows, seeing as i doubt it is an overheating issue.
The programs which when being opened that cause my computer to crash: Firefox, IE7, occasionally Google Chrome, very rarely WMP11
Also the system has no virus's or spyware, Avast and Spybot are the two progs i use for anti Virus and anti Spyware.

Thanks again Daniweb

The first BSOD has relevance to this article : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/137539 :

The second has relevance to this one : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314063 :

The first link says about a faulty motherboard/RAM, the second also relates to RAM mainly. I personally would take the laptop to a Technically minded person who works for a computer shop. They would be able to test it for you, and find the direct cause of the problem, because it would be there in front of them, rather than fixing it without seeing it, as we are doing it here. Take it to a computer tech store, see what they say about it, after giving it a good check over, and go from there. Would appear that the problem is Motherboard / RAM based.

But AVG 8.0 is the best free anti-virus and anti-spyware package.

Serunson 413 Posting Maven

I would borrow / buy some RAM of the exact same type of yours, that you definatly know works, and try it. If that doesnt help, then it would be a more serious issue, for a IT tech to look at after taking apart the laptop. To see if something inside has broken.

Serunson 413 Posting Maven

A while, but just surround it in liquid nitrogen for a long time first :P
Everyone needs some supercooled superconductor! :D

Serunson 413 Posting Maven

One thing that i found quite funny, was that the media kept saying that CERN is a black hole machine, and will kill us all. yet everyone knows that it can make black holes, but what the media dont say is that, they disappear as fast as they appear, and so nothing comes of them. Good job i did physics once.

Serunson 413 Posting Maven

You cant physically install a soundcard as in a desktop soundcard into a laptop. The nearest thing you can get to one, is an external soundcard that conencts through a USB or the like. Such as this one here : http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=97120 :
This is basically a sound card that attaches to your PC/Laptop with a USB cable.

Serunson 413 Posting Maven

It cant be overheating, seeing as i have a cooling pad underneth with 2 fans blowing cool air at it. So i doubt that overheating is the problem, also its not the USB port, seeing as they all work fine.

Serunson 413 Posting Maven

Right i believe this is mainly to do with my Graphics Tablet, a Trust TB-3100.
My specs first off, this is a laptop remember, so i cant do anything about the motherboard, processor or PSU:
2.4Ghz AMD Turion 64x2
3Gb RAM
250Gb HDD
Vista Home Premium SP1
HP Pavilion DV9800 entertainment PC.

The first issue that i can't get my head around is that my laptop beeps. It makes one solid beep that lasts around half a second, while the screen is frozen. The laptop ignores mouse movements and key presses, but when i click the mouse button repeatidly it beeps at me.

Secondly my graphics tablet makes Vista VERY VERY slow. When i press Ctrl+Alt+Del, it shows me a black screen, and then 30 seconds later it shows me the menu where you can click Task manager, then after clicking Task Manager, it takes another 30 seconds to show the desktop again. How can this one device be causing all this hassle? And yes i am using the most up to date drivers, the one from the top of the list here : http://www.trust.com/products/product_detail.aspx?item=12579 :

Thirdly, it showed me a BSOD with the end Code C2, and BAD_POOL_CALLER, i am assuming that this is due to me pulling our the USB while vista was frozen thinking about the graphics tablet.

Please can you help me find an answer to this!

programming lectures can be very dull

Serunson 413 Posting Maven

Dust is the most likely cause of overheating, do as caperjack said, blast some air through the vents on your case to un clog it, or open up your case, and use a hoover to remove any and all dust and dirt. How many fans do you have in your machine?

Serunson 413 Posting Maven

That would show that you have a faulty stick of RAM. What i would suggest is to use the Crucial RAM scanner : www.crucial.com : this website has a small scanner application, which will tell you what type of RAM your machine takes, and how much you can put into each slot. They also sell RAM directly and are a very reputable company.

Serunson 413 Posting Maven

The previous prime minister was Tony Blair, also an idiot, and the current one is Gordon Brown, a very big idiot. Basically the entire Labour party are out to make our lives a living fortress of DOOM, by taxing us, and making us a nany state, where we cant do anything for ourselves.

Serunson 413 Posting Maven

"STOP: 0x00000050
PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA
This Stop error indicates that requested data was not in memory. The system generates an exception error when using a reference to an invalid system memory address. Defective memory (including main memory, L2 RAM cache, video RAM) or incompatible software (including remote control and antivirus software) might cause this Stop error."
Quoted from a website, that basically means that a stick of your ram is faulty. To try and determine which one it is, boot your laptop with only 1 stick of RAM in one slot, then move it to the next slot, and repeat with the other stick of RAM, to see which one is bad. If that's not the fault, then look at any other new software you have installed, and uninstall it, seeing as that may be causing the problem.

Serunson 413 Posting Maven

Age isnt in its favour, RAM wouldnt suddenly go bad, could be the CMOS battery dieing, although without that BSOD error code, we can't pin point it down further that guess work.
Have you installed any new hardware or software recently? Often this is the cause of most BSOD's
