I have never actually used the Digital Mars compiler, but I have never heard anything good about it. I think you'd be better off with DEV-C++ or Borland 5.5 for free. DM seems to have major trouble when you wish to learn Standard C/C++ -- I don't think it conforms to any standard.

Thanks WaltP for the suggestion. After reading a couple of posts made to this forum indicating that DEV-C++ would be amongst the preferred free compilers, I've actually already decided to switch over to it, but it's just a question of when. For now, I'm going to continue using DM only because it's what my instructor has advised us to use (I have to say that I haven't had any issues with it throughtout the course). I'm on the last unit of the (online) class and hope to wrap up the course by the middle of this coming week, so it won't be much longer. Then it's a question of whether or not my system meets the requirements, and if not how $oon I can upgrade it. Thanks again.

Can anyone suggest me a nice and easy to use C/C++ compiler under Windows..
Give the URL from which I can download.
Thanks in anticipation...

In this thread WolfPack provide me a link to the online reference manual for the free Digital Mars Compiler that I'm using - which I've found easy to use.

I borrowed mt sister's PC & tried all combinations, ie, connect 1 to 2, 1 to 3 & 2 to PC 3, & they all told me the network cable is unplugged when it is definitely connected up.

You can't connect two computers directly to each other with a regular(straight-thru) ethernet cable; you must use what's called a cross-over cable. I rechecked the thread and see that you mentioned that you're unsure of what a cross over cable is, so let me advise you how to check, because it is very important to know the difference between these two types of standard ethernet cables.

A standard ethernet cable (RJ-45) will have two male plugs, one on each end of the cable, that are almost exactly like a telephone wire jack plug (RJ-11), the only difference being that the ethernet cable ends will be two or three times the size of a telephone wire end (some ethernet cables will come with a little rubber/like boot covering most of the connector; if your cable(s) have these just push them back off of the connector for the time being).

You should see a little tab on the connector, which is what you squeeze to take the cable out of the the computer/router/DSL modem/etc. - if the connector is missing the tab the it's either broken off and you need to replace the connector(s)/cable(s), or if it is simply not there then you have the wrong cable(s) and once again they will …

...I have two computers at home...I installed...a switching hub ...

a hub will work for you only if your ISP is setup to assign 2 or more ip addresses for your account/cable modem

most isp co's only assign 1 ip address for access - this is something that you're going to need to find out for sure before we can help you find the most economical, and efficient, solution to your connection issue

my guess is that your isp only assigns 1 ip address per account or cable modem

if you have a hub it won't work, you'll need to get a (low cost) router
if you have a "smart" hub it won't work, you'll need to get a (low cost) router
if you have a multi-port switch then it needs to be setup properly, and it still may not work for you

find out from your isp if they assign just the one ip address or do they offer multiple ip addresses per account/cable modem, and how they are assigned (either dynamic/via DHCP or specified/static).

and let us know what piece of equipment you actually have (manufacturer, model, designation - whatever is written on it, or indicated on the instructions/manual

...How do I set up [Sygate Personal firewall] for incoming and outgoing mail?...

Either contact your corporate IS dept., or have them give you the contact info needed to work directly with Sygate to ensure that the firewall software is configured properly.

...The host smtp.frontiernet.net could not be found. Please verify that you have entered the server route correctly. Account 'pop3 .frontiernet.net. Protocol SMTP,Port25, Secure(SSL);No Socket Error.11004.error number...

This part of your quote is probably not entirely accurate; the actual error message probably went a little more like the following:

"The host 'smtp.frontiernet.net' could not be found. Please verify that you have entered the server name correctly. Account: 'pop3.frontiernet.net', Server: 'smtp.frontiernet.net', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 11004, Error Number: 0x8#######"

Notice that, among other edits, I deleted the space in "Account: 'pop3 .frontiernet.net'" - more on the importance of correct configuration data entry immediately below.

The SimpleMailTransferProtocol host is fundamentally the server, or specialized computer, that all outgoing e-mail is sent to, for the network that your computer is a part of, so that it can send your company's e-mails to the various e-mail servers of other companies/web-presences.

The SMPT error message you quoted means one or more, or even all, of the following:
1) The settings may actually be correct, but the firewall really is blocking the transfer of the e-mail out of your computer (really, the e-mail client …

i was a contractor for a global services company for a couple of yrs and most of "our" clients used large LANs w/racks - sometimes a large room filled w/racks - of hubs, albeit typically smart hubs; so there's gotta be something giving on that. maybe a price/performance issue... at any rate, for my lab purposes i'm pretty sure hubs are what i need, but b4 it comes time to drop the dimes i'll do a needs analysis comparing hubs & switches. thanks for the input.

(btw, who's calling the kettle black here on posting in English, dude! :p ;) )

1st let me recommend u either learn how to use the help files from windows (which by-and-large i find to be infuriating) or purchase a book on WinME; alternatively you may want to check w/ur locale pub library & see if they have any for loan. why? because WinME does have a rather easily accessible DOS console and if u can't find it you need some real basic guidance (like we ALL did on first starting out!).

2nd, just what's wrong w/ur connection?
how does it drop out - after x minutes of use, or if u leave ur pc/dsl modem of for x amount of time? only when running a particular program? a particular time of day/evening? is it slow?

btw, are u using any file sharing programs, such as Kazaa or WinMX?

much like a hurdler running a race a trouble shooter has to first set a goal - either winning a race or identifying a problem to be solved, and then set about tackling the obstruction(s) to that goal one issue, or hurdle, at a time.

so let's 1st identify exactly what problems you're having b4 we set out to resolve the issues, ok?

One of the curiosities of life that intrigued Mr. Einstein, which he was not able to solve, was just why couldn't people be in two places at once. So, my nickname is a bit of a play on that perplexing duality, in that here is an eminently renowned scientist and yet when one is referred to as "eh, einstein!" its typically meant in a derogatory manner. It's also pretty sweet that the "a" in my "aeinstein" can also denote his first initial. Next to The Lord, my dearly beloved Pops and my twin Bro, I hold Mr. Einstein in the highest of regards.
